"I Carry Your Heart With Me," A Discussion of the Poem by E. E. Cummings

“I Carry Your Heart With Me” by EE Cummings has been a favorite love poem and a favorite choice at weddings for years. The poem regained interest after it was featured in the film In Her Shoes. It is used to devastating effect in the film’s climactic wedding scene and again to close the film. Countless fans have been inspired to revisit the touching words “I carry your heart with me.”

Poet

EE Cummings was born Edward Estlin Cummings in 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He died in North Conway, New Hampshire in 1962. Cummings received his BA from Harvard in 1915 and delivered a speech entitled “The New Art” that same year. A year later, he earned a master’s degree in English and classical studies, also from Harvard.

During World War I, Cummings joined the American Red Cross Ambulance Brigade in France. The French imprisoned him on suspicion of disloyalty, a false charge that landed Cummings in prison for three months. He wrote a novel huge room about your experience. Many of Cummings’ works have an anti-war message.

Cummings was a fine artist, playwright and novelist. He studied art in Paris after World War I, and he adopted the Cubist style in his works. He considered himself both an artist and a poet, spending most of the day painting and most of the night writing. Cummings especially admired the art of Pablo Picasso. Cummings’ understanding of presentation can be seen in his use of typography to “paint a picture” with words in some of his poems.

During his lifetime, Cummings wrote more than 900 poems, two novels, four plays and had at least half a dozen performances of his works.

Contrary to popular belief, Cummings never legalized his name as “ee Cummings”. His name must be correctly capitalized.

Verse

E. E. Cummings’ poetic style is unique and extremely visual. His typographical independence was an experiment in punctuation, spelling, and rule-breaking. His style imposes a certain rhythm on the poem when it is read aloud. His language is simple, and the poems become fun and playful.

Cummings’ poem “I carry your heart with me” is about a deep, deep love, the kind that can separate the stars and surpass soul or mind. The poem is easy to read, easy to speak, easy to understand by people of any age.

The poem can almost be called a sonnet. It has just about the right number of lines in just about the right combination. But, typical of Cummings’ poem, he goes in his own direction and does so to great effect.

The poem becomes a wonderful love song when set to music. The outstanding guitarist Michael Hedges set the song “I carry your heart” to music on his album “Taproot”. Hedges himself performs the lead role, but backing vocals are provided by David Crosby and Graham Nash.

More than 168 of Cummings’ original poems have been set to music.

Enjoy the words and sentiments of this famous poem.

I carry your heart with me

I carry your heart with me (I carry it

my heart) I am never without him (nowhere

i go you go, my dear; and all that is done

only me, it’s your business, my dear)

I’m afraid

I don’t want any fate (because you are my fate, my darling).

there is no world (because you are beautiful, my world, my real one)

and you are what the moon has always meant

and all the sun will sing is you

here is the deepest secret that no one knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

and the sky of the sky of the tree called life; which grows

higher than the soul can hope or the mind can conceal)

and it is the miracle that separates the stars

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
