Rosslyn Chapel, located north of Edinburgh in Scotland, was started around 1446 by William Sinclair, believed to be a Knight Templar who probably fought in the Holy Land Wars. Freemasonry has consistently adopted the belief that the Supreme Architect of the Universe manifests Himself through human growth – the impulse moving from within man to manifest action. There is no greater miracle than that produced by a tiny mustard seed, which, when planted in the ground, produces a bush many thousands of times its own size. The Bible contains a parable that uses a tiny mustard seed to illustrate an important spiritual truth about the power of faith. In Freemasonry, the Craft teaches that the Supreme Architect manifests Himself through an infinity of forms that are implanted in the dark material earth. One such form is art, which Freemasons teach to understand and create.
Scientists around the world are currently trying to determine the historical origins of Freemasonry. They do this by looking for multiple pathways that promise empirical certainty after full analysis. These “secrets”, like understanding what growth means, cannot be revealed, even if someone actually decides to sit down and explain them to the world. Like death, Freemasonry can only be “experienced” and so the “secrets” remain hidden from anyone who chooses never to enjoy the experience. So it is with our Green Man, because it is from his mouth that vegetation grows, and around his head a tumultuous growth curls. He grows, he experiences and becomes wiser.
