Secrets of the Freemasons

Rosslyn Chapel, located north of Edinburgh in Scotland, was started around 1446 by William Sinclair, believed to be a Knight Templar who probably fought in the Holy Land Wars. Although none of these facts have been confirmed, the chapel he built is filled with stone carvings that, taken as a whole, leave a clear impression that the site is religious. However, this is definitely not a Christian site, and it is difficult to fit it into any known religious motif. This is, in a word, a unique demonstrative proof that the architect was very involved in the initiation mysteries.

One of the stone images carved in the interior of the chapel symbolizes the Green Man, which in certain religious studies is associated with the so-called pagan religions. After careful examination of these images, it seems more likely that the Green Man corresponds to a more Masonic interpretation of the Deity than any other religion or philosophy. The image clearly shows a human head with leafy vines growing from the inside, extending outwards through the mouth and moving upwards to form a thick bushy vegetation.

Although the figure could certainly symbolize the endless cycle of seasons and rebirth commonly found in other well-defined pagan symbols, its origins are Greek and Roman. To them, the Green Man symbolized the full flowering of education and thus inspired those who set out to seek knowledge. Later, the Green Man entered Christian symbolism, where it symbolized the immortality of the spirit and the resurrection of Jesus. Whether the Green Man symbolizes Jesus connecting Heaven to Earth or a more simplistic pursuit of knowledge, it is undeniable that he also symbolizes the growth of the human spirit.

Art is the seed of human spirituality, as from a simple sentence in a masterful piece of literature or a single line drawn in a painting, messages and ideas flow that those who read or observe can interpret for their respective personal improvement. This is the basis for the regeneration of humanity, or the transformation from a state of ignorance to a state of knowledge – just as the ancient alchemists transformed tin into gold. Thus, the Green Man symbolizes the wisdom that man acquires through the knowledge gained as a direct result of his growth in spiritual matters, beginning with the mustard seed, or smallest particle of spiritual knowledge imparted to him.

It will be fair to ask here what art a Freemason should study. Should we consider Da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper, which has generated so much interest in recent exciting books and films about the legend of the ancient Templars? Is it a complete and total absorption of all literary works written by Albert Pike? Or are you expected to absorb other forms of art and discern from them the message of God? Although the answer that all art is important to human development is inaccurate, it is a true answer.

The Masonic secret is that knowledge has never been sought merely because it benefits the learner, but because it ultimately benefits those with whom the learner comes in contact. Masonic authors who have explored both the science and philosophy of alchemy have also given us an understanding of how the Green Man represents the benefit of one man’s knowledge for another man’s welfare. Freemasonry has consistently adopted the belief that the Supreme Architect of the Universe manifests Himself through human growth – the impulse moving from within man to manifest action. There is no greater miracle than that produced by a tiny mustard seed, which, when planted in the ground, produces a bush many thousands of times its own size. The Bible contains a parable that uses a tiny mustard seed to illustrate an important spiritual truth about the power of faith. In Freemasonry, the Craft teaches that the Supreme Architect manifests Himself through an infinity of forms that are implanted in the dark material earth. One such form is art, which Freemasons teach to understand and create.

Scientists around the world are currently trying to determine the historical origins of Freemasonry. They do this by looking for multiple pathways that promise empirical certainty after full analysis. However, since Freemasonry encompasses a diverse number of disciplines, it is unlikely that the true origins will ever be discovered without a careful appreciation of the symbolism that Freemasonry has chosen over the centuries to convey wise and serious truths. One famous Masonic writer went further and asserted that the origins of Freemasonry will never be traced, because that origin is shrouded in superphysical mystery. Whether or not we ever learn the full truth about the origins of Freemasonry, we can begin the effort by pushing aside that veil and studying the various symbols of the craft, as well as the various works of art created from the depths of the human soul and spirit. .

There are essentially two methods by which a person can develop: by observing nature or by creating and appreciating art. A true artist constructs his work according to the laws of nature, either by accepting all that nature has revealed, or by assimilating as much of what exists in nature as is necessary to complete the artist’s design. It is from such designs that humanity learns about humanity’s place in the Magnus Opus of all works of art—the grand design of the Supreme Architect of the Universe.

The art of deciphering Masonic secrets and the symbols used by Masons can be used to reveal the unsuspected wisdom that was most likely originally possessed by those who lent these symbols to the fraternity. Ancient books with erroneous page numbers, as well as the many secret alphabets used over the centuries, must be included in the decipherment. For cunning methods were often used to hide divine truths from the uninitiated. As a specific example, consider Shakespeare’s literary works, which some believe were actually the works of Sir Francis Bacon: that famous Rosicrucian and Freemason who is said to have been the legitimate son of Elizabeth I; dedicated to the charitable activities of the Craft; and desperately needs a “political cover” to avoid detection as the author of such politically inflammatory works as those contained in several of Shakespeare’s plays. What is the truth? Can it be found out by studying the work of art itself? Is it worth knowing? These questions can only be answered by those who have taken the time to research the works and decide for themselves.

The symbolism of the Green Man also teaches us that growth is experiential, meaning that it can only be experienced in order to be fully understood. This also applies to the “secrets” of Freemasonry. These “secrets”, like understanding what growth means, cannot be revealed, even if someone actually decides to sit down and explain them to the world. Like death, Freemasonry can only be “experienced” and so the “secrets” remain hidden from anyone who chooses never to enjoy the experience. So it is with our Green Man, because it is from his mouth that vegetation grows, and around his head a tumultuous growth curls. He grows, he experiences and becomes wiser.
