What Is NLP, Really?

It was a few months after successfully completing my NLP Practitioner certification training when the truth began to wash over my reality in gently encouraging waves. For weeks I had been gradually and unconsciously putting together the pieces of the great puzzle that had formed in my mind, and at last the whole picture appeared before me, now clear in the bright light of my awareness.

I knew from the beginning that my continued research was gradually unraveling the threads of something very special, and pulling away at the last knot would suddenly reveal a bigger picture that resonated with meaning in a way that amazed and then captivated me. The teachings and methods I adopted during my studies were actually part of a much larger gift.

The standard definitions of NLP and even the rather outdated name “neuro-linguistic programming” don’t really do justice to what the modern concept has become. The unfortunate ones leave the training believing that NLP is just a set of techniques they learned to achieve selfish ends. How much value they have lost, their vision obscured by the fog of process and procedure!

So what happened when the last piece of the jigsaw fell neatly into place? A new picture told me that NLP is much more than just a set of techniques. NLP is persuasive a way of being, a whole new approach to being myself and living the life I’m meant to live. A new way of thinking that goes far beyond the limitations of my existing neurology and dives into a quantum world of infinite possibilities. Suddenly a light bulb went on and everything became possible.

NLP thinking begins with the opening of the mind and conscious and unconscious integration, bypassing the critical faculty barrier that blocks creativity and imagination and locks us firmly in logic. Who are we to impose on others our model of the world, our limited reality? Freed from the chains that limit our thinking, we can look at the world without judgment, with honesty, trust and forgiveness, and with a newfound respect for life.

Suddenly and perhaps unexpectedly, the relationship acquires a completely new quality. For me, there are three main categories of relationships; relationships with ourselves, with others and with our environment. The first taste of change comes with a primary relationship, a relationship with yourself. Finally, internal conflict is resolved without punishing or defeating either party, but through a mutual consensus of the highest positive intentions. Congruence is achieved through full alignment, and the rivers of energy begin to flow in swift currents again. Dams that have held back the flow of energy for so long break down and are replaced by a cleansing immersion in self, confidence, and contentment.

Accepting others takes our relationships to a new level. By looking at relationships from different platforms of perception, it becomes easy to appreciate perspectives that differ from our own. Suddenly, the relationship becomes much more interesting. By changing the way we communicate with people, both verbally and non-verbally, we create connections that mean we can get anyone to really hear what we have to say and listen between the lines of what we hear. Treating each interaction with newness and wonder creates relationships that will last with anyone, in any context, in any environment.

Thirdly, our relationship with the environment, in the vast universe of which we occupy only a particle, is extremely important. As our NLP thinking develops, it becomes clear that just as a crystal reflects the world on its brilliant, multifaceted surface, each precious personality projects its own reality. Recognizing that we create our reality based on our own beliefs, values, and perceptions rewards us with the unique ability to begin shaping and shaping our reality. Designing for success is where success is born. If we know what we want, know what actions we need to take to get it, and know when we are behaving appropriately, we can embrace success and excellence in everything we do. Quantum physics tells us that every point in the universe is undeniably connected, so whatever you think you are, you are much, much more than that.

NLP is a thirst for knowledge. By sustaining continuous gulps of learning that exhaust the desire to know and understand ourselves, we are constantly expanding the boundaries that define our thinking. We are beginning to expand our neurology and begin to tap into areas of the mind that have been lost to us for so long. Expansion allows us to see new things in new ways and go beyond what we think is possible. As comfort zones expand, we develop the ability to understand what makes people work and produce the behaviors that make them work, and change becomes possible. Increasing our mental capacity for ethical and desirable change within psychology rewards control over state, physiology, and behavior, creating amazing results.

For many years, NLP was considered the domain of a therapist, and now, in modern terminology, a coach. The modern world has demonstrated the flexibility of NLP thinking to complete the puzzle of diverse environments. Companies around the world are achieving amazing results by incorporating NLP into their organizational culture. Sportsmen and women across a range of disciplines are now realizing that optimal performance in sports starts in the head. Learning and education centers recognize the value of understanding individual learning styles and strategies, and of course, coaches and therapists continue to deliver amazing results and transformational changes to their clients. Every week, people around the world engage in their own personal development and expand the boundaries of their thinking, creating new possibilities through the study of NLP thinking.

Now, as a certified NLP trainer, I continue my journey of self-actualization and personal development through education. I strive to ensure that every student I teach leaves the learning environment with a full and comprehensive appreciation of NLP thinking and the knowledge that NLP is much more than a set of amazing techniques for change.
