The Secret To Being Your Own Best Personal Stylist
Wouldn’t life be great if we had our own personal stylist at our disposal when we needed her? Someone who could go shopping for us, buy exactly what fits us perfectly, organize our wardrobe and know the latest and greatest styles? However, for most of us, this remains a dream. So let’s face reality and see how you can apply a creative, energetic, results-oriented approach to your own styling. Yes, you can be your own best personal stylist! The secret to becoming the best personal stylist is following a system, enlisting a trusted friend, putting in the time, and adding a dash of your own innate creativity. I hear you now – I don’t have time or creativity… Believe me, the TV will not miss you as long as you devote time to your style. And I firmly believe that everyone has creative abilities – you just need to give them freedom. I am convinced that if you follow the system described, you will see how easy and fun it is.
Let’s see where to start:
1. Start by creating a lookbook for yourself. Buy a fun notebook, cut out pictures of clothes and accessories that jump out at you from magazines, brochures, etc. and paste them into your notebook. Images should reflect the look you want, not what you currently subscribe to. Add words to your look book by describing how you plan to achieve your personal style look according to your personal and professional life roles and goals. It may take some time to find exactly what you are looking for. Just enjoy the process and think how tasty and fun it is.
2. Clean out your wardrobe. Make an appointment with a reliable and honest friend who will help you. Now that you have a look book as a guide, try on all the clothes you have. Here are the rules you and your friend should follow: a) if clothes and accessories make you feel great, keep them; if not, give it away or throw it away; b) if they make you shine and emphasize your features – they are guardians; c) say goodbye to dirty, neglected, unworn, clothes that no longer fit (yes, I believe you plan to shed those few pounds to fit back into them; however, when you do, reward yourself with something better!) . With a lookbook in hand and a strong self-esteem, keep your wardrobe simple and desirable, complete with only the clothes you love to wear. Don’t dig into the “when I lose weight or it will come back in style someday.” Follow a one-in, one-out policy.
3. Invest in yourself and your wardrobe. Now that you’ve taken some steps to clean out your wardrobe, you’ll need to find some great accessories to complement your new style. However, before you start furiously filling your closet, keep in mind that you’re taking a simple approach right now. First, develop a budget for your spending on clothes and fashion accessories. Don’t go into debt and then not enjoy your new great style. Second, make a shopping list of what you need before you leave home. Third, here’s how you shop:
a) When you buy one item, like a skirt or pants, continue until you’ve got the right top, shoes and bag. Think of an outfit, not a single piece of clothing.
b) Always keep yourself in shape. Get it right and your clothes and accessories will always be flattering.
c) Understand colors. Pastel is complex. They can make the freshest complexion look yellowish and make your body look bigger. All black seems easy, but can be very harsh. Always match it with a bright complimentary color on jewelry, bag, top or jacket. Or try another, softer dark, such as chocolate, burgundy, northern or charcoal. Cream, pearl gray or bright shades are more suitable near the face than black, which emphasizes bags and wrinkles under the eyes. Experiment in front of a well-lit mirror, applying different colors to your face. Ask your trusted friend for advice on which ones flatter you and which ones take away from your face.
When you’re on the path to your best personal stylist, remember that personal style is a learned behavior, a simple and gradual process of training your eye to capture your best silhouettes and proportions in any season, any year. Style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Onassis weren’t born with these skills, they developed them by respecting themselves, learning what looks good and, most importantly, what makes them feel their best. Here’s to you as the best personal stylist!
