‘Begging’ by Siphiwe Ka Ngwenya

Should we feel compassion or any sense of empathy for beggars? It can often seem like beggars should be nominated for an Academy Award for their acting skills. They seem to be able to act sad and desperate. And what should we do but feel sorry for them? Siphiwe Ka Ngwenya wrote the poem ‘begging’ because he was aware of the plight of those who were real beggars. He saw those who were really suffering in sad circumstances.

The poem is written in free verse. There are no punctuation marks. It creates a feeling of despair. Beggars have made begging their profession. They beg to live another day. Some work at the institution from nine to five. Others are self-employed. In any case, no one at work or in society really cares how we get through another day. Some go home after work and start drinking. Others flop around in front of the TV. And there are those who go out and socialize or work at a second job.

Beggars beg to live one more day. The poet uses the lowercase letter “i” to diminish the status of the narrator. The narrator witnesses what many of us would rather not see: the desperation on the streets. He just tells us what he sees. And who is the narrator? Well, if you’re walking down a crowded street, every stranger you pass is a nobody. In fact, you are also nobody. Beggars are “nobody”. However, every person who finds themselves on the street for whatever reason has an expression on their face that tells a story. Some expressions are deeply engraved and, like graffiti, they are not easy to remove. Pain can be seen on the faces of the beggars. Their faces are gloomy. They have wounds and bruises on their hands and body. They are blistered and shaking. Fever? Coldly? They suffer from anxiety.

When there is no work, there is no money, which means no food, no shelter, no safety, no clothes, no medicine…nothing. When we have nothing, we feel despair and anxiety. When we need things, but there is no money, we feel the need to ask someone to help An extreme case of the question begging.

But then why do beggars lie? They do this to hide their inadequacy; their shortcomings. They can’t find a job, but they feel vain. They hide behind lies to get something…anything…to get through another day. Their lies self-service and cannot harm those who are lied to. There are lies harmless. There are many different cultures in South African cities. In every culture and in every language there is poverty: someone suffers; someone asks; someone is begging.

And the poet sees them all… passing by.
