Impact of Baby Boomers on American Society

Demographers have defined the baby boom as an increase in births that began in 1946, after World War II and peaked in 1957 and continued until 1964 because of postwar prosperity. Most people use “generation” as their term, but demographers have referred to it precisely as “cohort” (group of individuals who experience a certain event at a certain time). This reveals that social changes interconnect with the lives of every baby boomer.

There are two groups of baby boomers. Babies born between 1946 and 1955 were called the first boomers. Those born between 1956 and 1964 were called “late boomers”. The last set was born during the first tour of the Beatles in America and the first ones were approximately 18 years old at the time. They are noted for their large populations. They crowded primary, elementary, secondary schools, the labor market and universities.

Studies show that the impacts caused by the society where the baby boomers grew up contribute a lot to reshaping society. They never think like their parents. Since the population of these cohorts is unprecedented during the 20th century, their beliefs and behaviors are predicted to dominate things.

But there is also a large discrepancy in terms of economic status between early and late boomers. Compared to the energetic job market and the emerging economy under the feet of the early boomers, late boomers need an adjustment to economic changes. It is due to the rapid growth of service sectors, jobs for the middle class have become less stable, the change of location of workers and the adjustments of the labor market.

Most consider economic security to be something elusive. They are the people who were born after the civil rights era. The studies carried out even reveal income differences according to ethnicity, race and place of birth that create ethnic classes. It was because a third of the population is Hispanic, African American or Asian in addition to white and black Americans. For example, the black boomer generation is considered inferior to whites, even though the generation was the highest rated in terms of education.

It is a fact that life was accompanied by post-war transformations that changed American society. Ideas about sexuality, gender and family have been profoundly altered. Likewise, paternity has changed, old age and retirement have been redefined and the workforce has been transformed. Even in their old age, they take the opportunity to stay involved and active such as staying in their workforce to fulfill the responsibilities of supporting their children.

Changes in society were never brought about solely by the stereotype but also by conservative types like Seth Grossman. They expressed themselves through street protests while conservatives use other forms such as leaflets, student newspapers and forums. Although their actions did not attract the attention of the media but they achieved their success when they forced a referendum that resulted in the withdrawal of Duke students from the National Student Association.

Conservatives may not be part of the projected boomer image, but they have become a strong force in quietly making their way. They are not even on the front pages of the newspapers because they continue to attend class while others boycotted. However, they supported conservative politicians such as George Wallace in 1968.

A third of the early boomer population served during the Vietnam War. Others have made a name for themselves in different fields throughout history. Joyce Johnson was an African-American who fits the stereotype of her activist work in graduate school. When she entered the Duke School, she sought advancement not only for herself, but for her entire race. He belongs to the Afro-American Society involved in the emblematic events on the Duke campus during the 1960s. Grossman and Johnson are baby boomers who contributed to major changes in their society.

Deep understanding about the baby boom generation is very important as they have advanced into their old age. It should be more of demographic curiosities because if the demographic lump is continuously moving in the system, then the economic differences also persist. In their day, they do their best to shape society by providing significant impacts in the lives of many people besides themselves.
