Knitting: A Step by Step Skill

Knitting can be a tedious activity, making patterns like large cardigans can be boring and time consuming. Knitting is not an expensive hobby either. Try recycling yarn from your old sweaters and cardigans. Or you can even buy a second hand knitting needle if you want. If you have enough time, you can invest your time in learning how to make your own yarn.

Some have their own knitting styles and techniques. Some go with the English method of knitting [also known as right hand knitting], where the yarn is carried in the right hand while others prefer to weave left hand or continental style. It is where the thread is held with the left hand and the needle in the right hand. Others argue that continental knitting is the best style to choose when knitting, as the yarn is in the left hand and with a slight movement of the left index finger, you can pick the yarn to form a stitch. Unlike English knitting which is the opposite of continental knitting; hold the yarn in your right hand and pull it over the needle to form the stitch.

But as for beginners, they may first need to know the basic knitting stitches, the correct way to hold the knitting needle, various sizes of knitting needles, and knitting needle conversion charts before starting knitting. It may take some time for them to learn different patterns and techniques to improve and make their sewing easier. But most knitting enthusiasts suggest that for a beginner it is best to start from simple patterns before gradually increasing the difficulty and learning your own technique. So here’s a breakdown of the knitting skills that will guide you through the process:

beginners

The beginner level usually concentrates on basic stitch, purl stitches and minimal form. Usually, I would recommend beginners to make projects like scarves, tea towels, or coffee pacifiers, since most of them are rectangular in shape and use basic stitches.

easy

easy [Advanced Beginner] The level tends to focus on projects that use basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shapes and finishes.

Intermediary

The intermediate level explores a variety of stitches, such as basic cable and lace, simple intarsia, double-pointed needles and knitting techniques with the round needle, intermediate level patterning and finishing.

expert

Experienced/Expert/Advanced level often using advanced techniques and stitches such as short rows, fair island, more complicated intarsias, cables, lace patterns and numerous color changes. This means more challenging patterns, colors and can involve intricate and complicated shapes and finishes.

Each of the knitters goes through this every level of difficulty. So, as a newbie, don’t be intimidated by the lavish and complicated patterns you’ll encounter.
