Guitar Effects Pedals – What Does The Compressor Pedal Do?

There are a lot of guitar effects pedals on the market with names that can really confuse us unsuspecting guitarists. However, the word compressor, on the surface, seems like a term we can actually understand and be familiar with. So what does this type of pedal do and how can we use it in our music? By trying to expand my understanding I managed to accumulate some useful information that I would like to share with you and hope it will help:

A compressor pedal “narrows” the signal that is produced by the guitar by normalizing the dynamic range of the audio input signal based on a threshold value. Almost everything you hear in music these days is compressed in some way, and it can sound like anything from a barely perceptible subtle effect to some sort of muted conglomeration of sounds.

The advantage of using a guitar effects pedal, like a compressor pedal, is that every note you play will have the same amplitude and therefore be at the same volume level. This alone helps normalize overtones that can get lost in the mix of other, more complex overtones resulting in a more cohesive or articulate sound. To demonstrate this, try playing an arpeggio and vary the pick pressure of the notes. This will mean you’ll get a different sound every time, especially through a tube amp because they react dynamically to strong and weak signals, that’s the beauty of them. A compressor pedal solves this and is normalized regardless of the guitarist’s technique or equipment. That is why they are preferred by soloists.

A compressor pedal also has the ability to increase the sustain of a note beyond what is normally possible on the guitar. Again, another reason why many soloists love them. Therefore, the smaller signal will be normalized to the same amplitude as a pick-up attack, leaving the final note to sound at the same volume until the guitar string no longer induces a signal for the pickup.

As we all know, the advantages of guitar effects pedals are often reflected in the drawback and the compressor pedal is no different. In some musical genres the expression of the performer is the fundamental reason why that music is so popular. The blues is an excellent example of this in action.

A compressor pedal will also dampen the attack of a guitar string when strummed. The effect of this is that the sound becomes a bit soft and less sharp. This is due to the reaction speed of the compressor pedal and how quickly it reacts to normalize the amplitude of the signal it is receiving. A slower response time generally results in a more natural, uncompressed tone, with a faster response time resulting in a soft sound.

As with all things in music, the preference is always with the player themselves and no matter how you try to influence it, they will usually revert to their own sound. A compressor pedal is a useful thing to understand and experiment with, as it is with any of the many guitar effects pedals available.
