The golf cart wheel and tire alignment reference

Keeping golf cart wheels and tires aligned is important to ride performance, ride quality, tire wear, and ease of use. Your alignment shifts through regular use (hitting rough terrain, curbs, and potholes), through high mileage, and through the installation of custom wheel and tire sizes.

Aligning your golf cart alignment is not rocket science. Our quick three-step guide below will teach you what you need to know to align your wheels and tires, to adjust your toe to 1/8 of an inch, and your cart on the straight and narrow!

Step 1: Check Your Camber!

First, place a flat straight edge on the ground and find out if there is a gap between the edge of the driver’s side front tire and the straight edge. If there is a gap, we will have to adjust the heim joints of the carriage. Heim joints are the two joints where the wheel assembly is bolted to the steering assembly.

Engage the parking brake, raise the front of the cart. Once the carriage is raised, loosen the nut on the inside of your carriage lower control arm (lower lower joint) and adjust the tire to match the camber based on the clearance the tire had when held next to the straight edge. If your fit is off (the top of the tire is closer to the frame than the bottom), push the bottom of the tire toward the center of the cart frame. If your camber is in (the bottom of the tire is closer to the frame than the top of the tire), push the top of the tire toward the center of the cart frame.

Once you have adjusted the heim joint to a more even tire position (flush / straight), lower the carriage and recheck the camber. If your camber is still off, we will adjust the second heim joint at the top of the spindle on the same side of the carriage (just above the heim joint on the lower control arm). If your camber is although out / this does not fix your curvature, repeat the process on both joints and continue to adjust as needed.

You’ll get better at this quickly after doing it just a couple of times. Once the driver side front tire is done, repeat the entire process for the passenger side front tire.

Step 2: Align the carriage, adjust the toe in / out

Face your cart in the front (as if it’s about to flip you over). Run a tape measure across the front of your tires and measure the distance from the inside of the tire on the left side of your cart to the inside of the tire on the right side of your cart. He moves to the side of his cart and lies on his stomach. Repeat the process for the rear of the tires (from inside edge to inside edge). Our ideal is to have a space difference of 1/8″ – 1/4″ difference between the front tire set edge-to-edge to the rear tire set edge-to-edge. This will help the stability of the cart.

Once you’re done measuring, we’ll need to adjust to get to our ideal range. Set the parking brake and raise the front of the cart. We will adjust yours finger. Loosen the driver side wheel tie rod and adjust the toe by turning the rod to the left or right depending on which direction you need to adjust the tire.

If you need to adjust the tire inward (toward the front of the cart), turn the rod toward the rear of the cart, which will cause the tire to adjust. If you need to adjust the tire outwards (or outwards, to the side of the cart), then rotate the tie rod toward the front of the cart, which will pull the tire out.

Once the rods on both sides are adjusted to our starting point of 1/8″ – 1/4″ difference between the front and rear of the front tire assembly, we will drop the carriage, roll forward 20 feet and recheck alignment. The reason for this is to detect any variation in our toe when tracking the fit. Once the carriage has rolled forward, check the toe again and adjust if necessary if the alignment is off.
