Ghostwriting – What It Entails

One of the least glorifying jobs a writer can do for a living is ghostwriting. Ghostwriting, as the name suggests, consists of writing a work on behalf of another person. The writer is the ghost and the person who hires the writer is the owner and credited author of the written book.

As a ghostwriter, one does not get the satisfaction of seeing one’s name in print. What you see is another person claiming authorship of the written work, which is an experience that can be painful for someone who has been working long hours and, in a way, degrading. However, ghostwriters are often well compensated in monetary income by giving up association with the written work, and this in itself can provide comfort to the writer.

Ghostwriting involves many areas of practical considerations. This article aims to provide details and guidelines that will be helpful in understanding the procedures that may be required to provide such a service.

To begin with, the ghostwriter must understand that it is usually someone who wants to publish a book under their own name that will contact the ghostwriter for the assignment. Once contacted, the ghostwriter’s task will be to first estimate the time and cost required to complete the desired writings, calculated based on the complexity of the content and the need for research. A book project will normally be completed within four months from the start date, but this depends in part on the availability of the ghostwriter, the length of the required writings and the subject matter.

The ghostwriting service hirer will first provide the story or ideas in a two- or three-page sample in draft or outline format, and then the ghostwriter will produce a custom sample for the hirer to evaluate the writing style before the lessee officially invests and hires the ghost writer for the job. The sample will be accompanied by an accurate price quote so that the lessee knows exactly what the full investment entails.

If the tenant accepts the sample and wishes to proceed with the project, they will make a non-refundable deposit of 25 percent of the project cost once approval is given to start. The ghostwriter will begin writing and submit chapters along the way for approval, where any number of revisions will be allowed at no additional cost. The only time revisions become an additional cost is when individual chapters are confirmed and approved, as any revisions at that point will affect the rest of the story.

When the book is halfway to completion, another 50 percent deposit will be requested and once payment is received, writing will continue as normal. Upon reaching 100 percent satisfaction with the completed book, the final payment will be collected.

The rest of the tasks upon completion will be the actual production and publication of the book, and these are not included in the quoted cost for ghostwriting. A reasonable price to charge the renter for the service will depend on the market price in the country of the service provided. This can vary widely, depending on familiarity with the writing topic, research requirements, and others. Since a ghostwriter usually requires “full-time” concentration for a few months on the project, a good pricing guideline will be to calculate the opportunity cost and opportunities lost as a result of taking on the project. In addition, the price should also include the goodwill for “selling” the copyright.

With all these aspects in mind, it is ultimately up to the writer to decide if they are willing to engage in this less than glorious role of ghostwriting. If monetary returns are important, then ghostwriting may be the way to go, depending on your demand.
