Evolving Fashion Trends – Then and Now
Well, it is not an understatement if one thinks that fashion in India has come of age and in the last few decades there has been a complete change in thinking about how fashion is perceived and how recent trends have transformed India. Fashion in a global brand.
India being a country with an age-old clothing legacy and known for producing some of the finest intricate creations in the world, it seems that it has a long way to go
How it all began –
Over the years, popular Bollywood trends have dominated the fashion scene from Madhubala’s Anarkali look with kurtas and churidars in Mughal-e-Azam (1960), to the purple embroidered saree worn by Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hain Koun . Thus, by taking a cue from history and imparting the rich and real flavor to costumes designed for films or social events, it has made it easier for Indian designers and Indian clothes to make their mark across the world.
The birth of changing fashion-
Also, it wasn’t until the birth of the 1980s that the first generation of Indian fashion designers began to emerge, including Satya Paul. Research shows that the designs and ensembles of some of the world’s most talented designers prove that some of these “new” trends are simply a part of the retro culture that brings the fashion of yesteryear back to today’s times.
The “feminine factor” – the biggest influence on the evolution of fashion –
Fashion is and has always been women-centric, no doubt, whenever a woman wears a traditional ‘sari’ it makes her look sultry and beautiful. Of course, this explains the extent to which Indian women have been the center of attraction for all things fashion and social change. Today the “sari” is no longer the basic dress for women that it once was and even for women. in their 30s today it is not so practical to wear saree as they are not used to it. It is no wonder that in the offices of an emerging ‘sari day’ in India it is celebrated as a special day. So some of these ‘new’ trends in the saree aka modern ‘Lehenga’ fit for Cosmo culture are simply reminiscent of a bygone era.
Fashion! Now and then-
Thus, from the above, it is evident that the influence of Western culture on fashion, especially regarding the youth, can be seen in today’s clothing that tries to find a balance between the original and traditional types, which again demonstrates the mix of the old ones and the new one So what was once worn as a part of daily life and was ordinary clothing seems to have now become a kind of social gathering clothing. Also, the first signs of the union of Western fashion and Indian clothing were witnessed when the Government of India opened the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Delhi with the help of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
This was a paradigm shift for the Indian fashion industry as there was now a formal recognition of new forms of traditional styles influenced by western culture which spawned many new ideas and concepts of fashion and other interesting fashion accessories for women.
Hence the new ways of draping the Saree have come to be known and now pairing it with fusion wear like dhoti pants has been the new trend now being promoted by the fashion houses among the crowd. What were once simple salwar suits have become Anarkali salwar kameez suits worn by many young women that make them look stylish and allow them to opt for bright colors and bohemian designs.
Well, everything is coming back, fashion is throwing back the ‘retro charm pendants’ of the 90s, the ‘loose pants’ of the 70s and even the ‘flashy long sleeves’ that date back to the 18th century. With so much going on, it seems like we have a lot to choose from, because change is good and everyone wants to move from the old to the new.
Thus, Crop tops, shoulder pads and even fanny packs are seeing a comeback. Also, a lively suit with intact shoulders was a big trend among business women in the 1980s and has now become corporate attire for many working women. And again, yoga pants, leggings and tight tops have become a common trend, I guess the credit goes to their sporty appeal.
Thus, the new idea of tradition is not to succumb to the philosophies of yesteryear that have been passed down from one generation to the next. Rather, the new idea of ethnic style is to befriend the philosophies of a bygone era and use them in relation to the contemporary sense and mood of today’s fashion.
Finally, once you can safely conclude that “Changing fashion is a law of change itself.”
