How to Convert Your RC Car Into Drift Spec

Remote Control Drifting is taking off in a big way, in this article I show you step by step how to turn that old 1/10 touring car into a drifters dream machine. It’s very easy and usually only takes a couple of hours, using this handy guide you’ll be on your side before you know it.

What exactly is drifting?

In a nutshell, drifting is the art of changing your car’s angle of attack while maintaining full control, so in a typical X drift driver approach the corner and turn hard too early, this will cause the rear of the car to come closer , Driver X will turn back into the slide and hold the car around the corner maintaining as much angle and speed as possible, then correct and launch the car into another slide just after the first, with the minimum straight. lining possible

Can an RC car drift?

Yes, if you’ve ever been involved in RC racing, you know the level of customization that comes with even basic RC cards, and drifting is no exception. While a standard RC car can come out of the box, there are some basic setups and chassis modifications that will help you get more angle, speed, and chops.

Where do I start?

The first thing you need is an RC car, I’ll use two examples, with the two I’ve had personal experience with, the Tamiya TT01 and the Tamiya TA05. The first step to drifting is to break that traction, due to the power to weight ratio of RC cars we need a little help, drift tires are all you need to go sideways, but there is more you can do if you want to compete If you can’t find RC Drift tires you can use duct tape, make sure you wrap it in the same direction the wheel will turn, a good trick is to lay it down and roll your RC car on it, this is the good thing, duct tape tires usually work best on surfaces that already have little or no traction, i.e. an underground parking lot, but they don’t last long. All drift tires have different tractions, more traction = bigger drifts, but this is useless if you need to race on a tight track as the amount of torque used to break the traction will also generate a lot of speed, in the end it all depends on the person. preference

What’s next?

OK, so you’ve taped your tires and played around a bit, the car doesn’t need to be more predictable, all the standard racing settings apply, the shocks, ride height and wheel angles are all up to you, but if you have to have something forced. it’s the rear differential, you have to lock it, this is also known as a spool differential, it basically means that both wheels must turn at the same time. The result is a car that will break and regain traction on command, drifts will also be much easier to control, more throttle = more angle, less throttle = less angle.

TT01

The Tamiya TT01 uses a planetary gear setup for the rear differential, which is easy to convert (and convert again if you change your mind later). a glue gun, or 2. Take a small piece of fuel pipe, cut it lengthwise and roll it around one of the planetary gears. Once done, close the differential and check if it gives the desired result before putting it back on. The other option is to buy a hop-up spool differential.

TA05

The TA05 uses a ball diff in the rear and front, this is not that easy to modify but it can be done. The way I modified mine was by using pop rivets. I opened up the differential and removed the ball bearings and the metal plates that the balls ride on. Then I drilled three small holes in the side, getting the two halves of the differential. Then I riveted them and filed the rivets. This worked, but be careful. 1. It is not reversible and if you make a mistake the difference will be destroyed. 2. It doesn’t last long, eventually the forces going through the differential will destroy this because it has been weakened by the holes. There is a coil diff available for the TA05 and these are the preferred options.

And the front differential?

Now that we have a solid platform, we can experiment with slightly different configurations to find the one that suits us best, this varies from car to car, but the principle is the same. I personally love using a front one-way differential or a center one-way differential for more control. The disadvantage is that using brakes at any time is the same as using the electronic brake (handbrake) in a real car, the tail will slide in a 180, while this can be useful for starting a drift and transition to a car. the second drift from the first is very easy to leave, so most people prefer not to use the one way. Again, this comes down to personal preference.

Why drifting is so much better than racing.

Well I love them both but from the drifting side it takes a lot more skill and a lot less car, what I mean is that even though racing takes skill you can make up for it with an amazing car, there is no way a TT01 is going to win constantly a race against a carbon fiber racing machine. But with drifting you can, a TT01 can do any car, yes it will be difficult, but a lot of drifting depends on the skill of the driver anything can happen. This being the case, it is also possible to drift with very little financial support (unlike racing)
