Book Review — "Guide to Vestment Design and Construction"

As a religious sister (nun) she should know the ins and outs of garment making. Nuns have made vestments for centuries, but like all art forms it has to be constantly updated due to new fabrics, embellishments and notions. It seemed to me that there were only a few of us left around, so I was very pleased to see how many people showed interest in making church vestments, and were more than happy to pass information on to those who requested. that That’s why I’m so glad I came across the e-book “Garment Design and Construction Guide”. made by Vestimenta e Bordados do Convento.

This “Guide” is exactly that. It begins with the background, history and development of the garments and then moves on to the design phase. There are many pictures to show many of the different types and styles as well as color combinations. Answer design questions about linings, color choices, trims and fabrics.

As it gets you ready to cut, sew, and assemble, it also gives you tips and tricks that make use of modern notions like stitch wizardry and fabric glues. Since orphrey is very expensive, there is a section that explains how you can make your own.

The book was written with both the experienced and the inexperienced seamstress in mind. Sewing velvet, a very difficult fabric to work with garments, is suggested only for experts and then tips are given on how to do it well.

The book takes you from start to finish through a complete set of vestments including some of the more traditional garments: burse, maniple, stole, dalmatic, cup, humeral veil, chalice veil and various types of chasubles. There is even a supplement that includes a miter pattern.

Due to the size of the book, it does not contain full size patterns, but it does contain scalable patterns that you can make yourself using that one inch paper/fabric that you can buy at most fabric stores or online.

Since it is an e-book and hence downloadable, people from other countries who also sew garments have access to it easily. A CD copy can also be purchased for those who want a ‘hard copy’ version.

All in all, this book is worth the small price that was asked for it, and I am happy to recommend it to all of you who are interested in this traditional art.

You can sometimes buy this book on Ebay, but you can always buy it from the publisher’s website: http://www.sewvestment.com, and I highly recommend that you do.
