Whether you are running a business or a business, most of us need to use some kind of software application to get our work done. For many of us, it is a Microsoft product of some kind. But what if the program you use is not the best fit for the type of work you do? What if your choice of program makes you waste hours every day? This can be a very expensive mistake, but believe it or not, it is very common.

MS Word vs MS Excel

Over the years I have supported many senior leaders. I was hired to replace the current assistant who retired. This department managed a coordinated Q&A program that required tracking submissions from all departments in the organization; Submissions are welcomed by all staff. At the time an average of 8-10 mails will be received each month and all must be entered and tracked and assigned a number.

When I was hired, this position had been in operation for at least eight years. We cannot analyze what type of questions we receive most; which departments answer the most questions (and therefore need more time and resources to manage them); which departments receive the least – which allows us to ask why that is; which questions have led to policy or process changes, small projects and even the development of new projects. The problem is, once we have invested time and energy to learn a new job; It is very difficult sometimes to invest a lot of time and energy every time there is a new one (which happens often) or even worse, if we have to learn a completely new application; so people just follow what they know.
