How many people do something that makes you shake your head and think, ‘I would never have done that’ or words to that effect? Often, learning that our way is not the only way can be very difficult. Sometimes however, a little understanding about others makes everything clear; or at least clearly enough that you can accept them more easily.

Knowing a little about behavior, your own and other people’s, will help you see why they do things that are different to you. This can help not only accept them for who they are but also reduce misunderstandings that lead to conflicts that get out of hand.

There are many profiles around the market, some are more valid and reliable than others, some are easier to understand, with participants with different price tags – pay more does not always equate to greater value or ease of understanding.

One of the easiest methods to understand is the model derived from the work of William Moulton Marston and carried forward by Professor John Geier. This is sold in many guises that all encompass four simple personality types whose names begin with the letters D, I, S and C that make the most mentioned ‘DISC Profile’. There are other things that have been created from there, with a lot of complexity of the type and the lack of clarity and understanding – be careful, not every DISC is the same.

The Model

Marston’s main point is that ‘normal’ people can be classified depending on how they perceive the environment – whether it is perceived as stressful for them or not. These people can be divided according to how they have reacted to the environment – recognized or not.

These two classifications lead to four answers, none of which are right or wrong, which can be identified and explained in general terms. Geier acknowledged that while these four types are the foundation, very few people can really fit themselves into a box at all – most of us are anything but difficult than that. He said however, we all have a mixture of some of us. If we can understand and identify the characteristics of different types, we can examine ourselves and see some characteristics of ourselves and other people.

This process can provide a way to talk about people’s behavior without thinking about what is right or wrong, leading to a greater understanding of each other, which can lead to a relationship more convenient as well as better performance which leads to better results.

Mode 1

People who find the environment stressful but react in an affirmative way are seen as competitive. They want to improve their environment by rising to challenges and overcoming them to achieve results. They are called Dominant. They can be seen as people who take risks and provide strong leadership even though they prefer to work more than people.

Mode 2

Other people don’t see the environment full of anxiety but still have the recognition that they feel. They want to join people and enjoy themselves, creating an environment that inspires other people to join them in success. They are called Disruption. They can appear happy and sometimes stretch themselves thin but they have a desire to help people and be with them.

Mode 3

The second group of people who do not see the environment to have stress occurs in an unexpected way. They want to cooperate with other people to be seen as important which makes them safe. They are called Regularly. They are reliable and eager to please, often unwilling to say ‘no’ to a request but can depend on cooperation and compromise.

Mode 4

The last group of people, who do not respond well to the environment they find stressful, like to think about the consequences of their actions. They are motivated by fairness and equality while striving to be right. They are called Be careful. They like clear boundaries and make better results, and are eager to investigate and cross-judge.

Understanding

The description should not be used to pigeon-hole people. Personality descriptions, however, can be used to help you identify similarities and differences between yourself and other people.

Personal profiling is only used to inform you about your personal behavior. However, it will be more powerful when it gives you words to describe the character in general. Using this, you can begin to measure how people act, far from who they are, because it is only the behavior that you have recorded.

With this new language, you can start entering into different conversations with other people. When you both can say these words, you will be better able to start talking about the differences between you, which itself leads to more understanding and a better working relationship.

Each type has its weaknesses and its strengths. If you can train yourself to find that end, you can begin to see the value that person has to you and your organization, not just the difference between you and the weakness that causing problems.
