Energy Expenditure Of Two T’ai-Chi Ch’uan Exercisers

T’ai-chi ch’uan (taijiquan, tai chi chuan) is a martial art practiced in China by Chinese Seniors for low effort and health promotion. There are five important factors, which vary in intensity and importance.

Yang style is the most popular style and is characterized by a choreographed map of 24 to more than 220 movements that are slow and smooth. Yang style information is similar in terms of how hard the exercise works. For the most part, to the outside observer, it doesn’t seem like much of an exercise. But the exerciser had a different experience.

A question often comes up, “Is tai chi an aerobic exercise?” To answer these questions I directly measured several tai chi chuan students and instructors using a state of the art medical device that measures the amount of oxygen they use while performing the Yang Style form. Everyone falls within the range of 2.5 and 3.5 miles per hour of energy consumption. I will focus on two tai chi teachers who have been tested.

I looked at the oxygen consumption of two Yang style t’ai-chi ch’uan instructors to determine their energy consumption. Oxygen consumption is the most important measure of energy consumption. From this number the number of calories (Kcal) used per minute can be determined.

I measured the oxygen levels of two professional Yang stylists to determine energy consumption. Type I (SI) was performed for 20 minutes and at a VE of 10.8 L/m to 18.5 L/m; VO2 of 549 to 795 ml/m; VO2 of 7.4 to 12.4 ml/kg/m; RER from 0.72 to 0.86. The average value for SI is VE 13.8 L/m; VO2 669 ml/m; VO2 10.4 ml/kg/m; TSI 0.78.

Item II (S-II) was made for 8 min with VE from 15.3 to 20.3 L/m; VO2 from 750 to 828 ml/m; VO2 from 9.3 to 11.1 ml/kg/m; RER from 0.70 to 0.86. The average value for S-II is VE 17.3 L/m; VO2 777 ml/m; VO2 10.4 ml/kg/m; TSI 0.78.

Both have similar numbers and average VO2 of 10.4 ml/kg/min and RER of 0.78.

This data shows that the t’ai-chi ch’uan form of training is an aerobic exercise for people with the lowest ability, such as in the 6 MET range and can be adapted to walking (3 mph pace). This is similar to the results found by other researchers.

Students with medical problems should be evaluated by their doctors according to the results of the drawing. Students with high blood pressure should be monitored to ensure that the movement does not cause an increase in blood pressure.

Summary: Yang style slow training materials are examples of low intensity aerobic exercise.
