Lavinia Fontana – An Artist From the Mannerist School of Art

The Italian Mannerist painter Lavinia Fontana was born in 1552 in Bologna. His father Prospero Fontana (1512-97) was a fresco artist at the School of Bologna, who even trained him for the first time as a youth. Later, Lavinia progressed to the Carracciesque style, which involved quasi-Venetian colors. The Italian Renaissance artist Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) influenced his work.

‘Monkey Child’ (1575) is his earliest known work. His second painting ‘Christ with the Symbols of the Passion’ (1576) is still at the El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas, USA. Lavinia is known by connoisseurs for her ability to combine different materials, golds, and textures into her rich paintings. He is famous for the attention he pays to details like poses and the use of a delicate palette. He was particularly good at painting large-scale mythological and biblical figures, including naked women and men. Unfortunately a few of his masterpieces such as ‘Queen of Sheba visiting Solomon’ (1598-1600) and ‘Venus; The Virgin Lifting a Veil from the Sleeping Infant Christ’ was inspired by the Italian Baroque artist Guido Reni (1575-1642).

At the age of 25 Lavinia met the painter Giano Paolo Zappi at her father’s workshop and married him in 1577. They formed a wonderful partnership that helped them live a good life. While Zappi helps Lavinia with her art and takes care of their eleven children, Lavinia focuses on her paintings and giving them to the family. At twenty-seven, the Dominican scholar and church historian Pietro Ciaconio (1526-81) published his self-portraits. ‘Self-Portrait Seated at His Table’ (1579) is a trademark. Fontana has more than 135 refined oil paintings to his credit. She is considered to be one of the best female actresses before the 1700s. ‘Portrait of a Noblewoman’ (1580), ‘Portrait of the Gozzadini Family’ (1584), ‘Allegory of Music’ are a few examples of his success in creating female figures on canvas.

At the age of thirty, Lavinia Fontana gained fame in her style of acting. ‘The Holy Family’ (1575), ‘Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalen’ (1581), and ‘The Dead Christ with Symbols of the Passion’ (1581), are a few of his outstanding works in the pattern. When he created ‘St. Francis of Paola Blessing a Child’ (1590) for the Church of Santa Maria della Morte in Bologne, his ‘Holy Family with the Sleeping Christ Child’ adorns the Escorial Palace in Madrid, Spain. In 1603, Lavinia and her family moved to Rome at the invitation of Pope Clement VIII (1536-1605). There he executed his famous 20-feet altarpiece ‘The Stone of St. Stephen Martyr’ to the Papal Palace, Vatican. In 1611, the sculptor Felice Antonio Cassoni (1559-1634) was praised for his contribution to the arts. He was also elected to the Accademia di San Luca at Rome. August 11, 1614, at the age of 62 Lavinia Fontana died.
