Teach Your Toddler To Identify Colors With These 5 Easy Steps

Generally, little ones start learning to identify hues when they reach 18 months. By the time they turn 2 or 3, most toddlers are able to name colors and tell them apart already. If you want to guide your child in learning all about hues, there are many fun ways on how to do so.

Follow these 5 easy steps to help your toddler identify and name the colors around them:

Start small

When teaching your toddler about shades, know that it will be a long learning process. That’s why you should start with simple things. Point out everyday objects and casually name the colors. When teaching colors, use identical objects for comparison like “red ball” and “green ball”. This makes him distinguish the hue much easier.

Use your child’s interest as a way to teach him

It’s easier for little ones to learn something when it’s associated with things they love. If your kid likes cars, you can point out different cars and name the color when you’re out on the road. If your little girl is into puzzles, use age -appropriate colourful puzzles to help her learn.

Prepare colorful meals

Involve your child in meal preparation – from grocery shopping, preparing the ingredients to helping out in the cooking process. Kids love to feel that they’re involved in a task, so this is a great way to learn and have fun at the same time. While you’re preparing ingredients (preferably fruits and vegetables), name each one and say the color. You can say “red tomato”, “green pepper” or “orange carrot” so each time he encounters these produce, he’ll remember what color it is.

Use songs and rhymes

Studies have proven that music plays a big role in the development of a child. At the same time, young children tend to remember rhymes easily, so putting these two together might help your child learn about shades faster. Download some fun videos that teach about different colors and watch them with your child. Once you’ve seen it together a couple of times, sing the rhymes (without watching the video) so the little one will remember it better!

Encourage more coloring time!

What better way to teach a young one about colors than crayons? Take those coloring books out with fun shapes and characters and make the session a fun quality time!
