Adopting Carl Jung and Milton Erikson’s Views on the Unconscious Mind and NLP Techniques

What do you think about the unconscious mind? How much faith do you put into it as a separate and functional entity? Have you ever found yourself driven to do something without understanding what motivates you? Are you stuck repeating patterns of behavior that seem to run on their own accord?

The Jungian approach to the psyche and the unconscious is inclusive, acknowledging the influence of art, culture, thought and culture on the psyche and providing the related to dream symbolism, myth, religion and spirituality. Jung believes that in order for people to achieve a sense of freedom and inner balance they must understand and integrate the two conscious and unconscious things.

This was my passion and mission when I started studying NLP in 1980 and became the basis for founding “Between 2 Minds Coaching and Counseling” services that teach people to use meditation and thinking in daily life and decision making. NLP is an acronym for Neuro-Linguistic Programming which is simply a behavioral approach to non-verbal and verbal communication and change.

In NLP training I was introduced to Milton Erikson who many call the Father of Hypnosis. He is the president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis. Do you know his job? Aside from Erikson’s greatest contribution to the work of hypnosis in particular, Interactive Hypnosis, his theory of thinking has had a profound effect on me. This theory suggests that the unconscious mind is always awake and listening even when we are asleep. Erikson specializes in hypnosis and also promotes the belief that the unconscious mind is a creative problem solver with the ability to create many solutions. Beneath the surface there is a conscious mind that looks, listens, and responds; a ready and helpful mind, a self-motivator and a resourceful person. My reaction to learning this is, “Good news, now how can I get in touch with this energy in my situation”?

Erikson’s work advanced short-term therapy and problem-solving focused on behavioral therapy. The co-founders of NLP studied and worked with Milton Erikson and developed a powerful approach to verbal and non-verbal communication and transformation. In relaxation and nonverbal communication Erikson told his clients to use specific words to promote change in state. Masterfully he weaves indirect lessons and metaphors into personal parables. Erikson works exclusively with the unconscious process and all its unconscious implications.

NLP techniques were developed to make Erikson’s work unique and available to the conscious mind. Among the many verbal and non-verbal cues given, learn how to speak and how to say the words in order to influence and change the self-defeating and self-destructive unconscious thoughts and feelings. thinking along with personal commitment and encouraging words is like finding a pot of gold. at the end of the rainbow!

We especially the children. So is our subconscious mind. Being like a big sponge it soaks up everything. If you don’t know how to filter and squeeze out the wrong thoughts and the painful confusion the following mental experiences make a storehouse of good and bad. By the time we reach adulthood the actions we are taking seem to be out of our control. And they are but incomplete and not permanent. What fuels them? You know the term “forgotten and unresolved issues from the past”? Now you can learn the best way to solve them.

In NLP there is a saying, “We cannot change our own history but we can change how we perceive our past”. Understanding leads to belief and belief propels us to action whether we realize it or not.

“Consciousness is a priceless gem.” Stephanie Rachel Alt
