We all know that choice of right mark-up language (HTML or XHTML) plays very vital role in affecting CSS. The simple reason is style sheet will be created according to the HTML and XHTML elements. In the niche market of web development, PSD to HTML conversion and PSD to XHTML conversion seamlessly used to code static PSD files. Both, types of conversions are not very different from each other and by comparing them it seems like comparison has been done between two identical twins.

Before comparing PSD to HTML conversion and PSD to XHTML it is important to know the basic difference between HTML and XHTML. The fundamental differences between the two markup languages encapsulated as follows:

Tags: SGML based application HyperText Markup Language allows to omit certain tags whereas XML based Extensible HyperText Markup Language doesn’t allow omission of any tags.

Attribute minimization: HTML permits usage of attribute minimization but XHTML strictly prohibit usage of attribute minimization.

Shorthand notation: One can use shorthand notation for empty elements e.g.

instead of

which is completely disallowed while using HTML codes.

Relative strictness: The relative strictness of XHTML over HTML is the primary major difference between the two.

Semantic codes: In HTML, the elements are not properly nested whereas in XHTML, all the elements are properly nested and closed.

PSD to HTML conversion has been substituted with PSD to XHTML conversion to simply enhance the interoperability with other file formats. By opting XHTML conversion, an individual can easily clean and cluter-free coding that help in improving webpage creation further. However, it is pre-requisite that XHTML documents should be one root element and all elements are properly nested and closed.

Earlier, pre dominant HTML language has been used for converting and coding PSD format based files but it lacks in some major areas. The biggest reason majority of web developers switched to XHTML is that HTML become convoluted with tags of some specific browsers. On the other hand, XHTML is highly compatible with all the major web browsers and therefore, W3C recommended it as mark-up language of the future.

The edge of XHTML shows well structured approach in comparison to that HTML use simplistic approach. In a nutshell, an individual can conclude that both – Psd to HTML conversion and PSD to XHTML conversion are reliable way for clean coding but choice of right one entirely depends on the individualistic requirements.
