Traditional Dances Of Kenya

The traditional dances of Kenya are some of the most diverse and popular in Africa. Different types of music are made by different peoples that exist in the country. The culture, language, dance and music of each tribe are different from each other. The drum is the most popular musical instrument used in many dance performances across the country. Other famous tools include; bells, horns, guitar, flutes and whistles.

The music and dance comes from the rich culture of Kenya and it can be divided into folk, traditional and international. Isikuti, the Luhya name for drum is a traditional dance for the Luhya people in Western Kenya. Men and women sway to the sound of drums, bells, whistles and horns in their dance style.

The Masai community has developed traditional dances in different eras. For example, Masai Jumping Dance which is also known as “Adamu” in Masai language is a dance performed by Masai warriors. They show their strength and power by jumping into the air one after the other while the other soldiers stand in a circle while they sing. The Masai community does not use instruments when performing their folk songs. Instead, the women wear bells and rattles that produce jiggling sounds when they call.

Both Kamba and Chuka people are famous for their acrobatic dances. They have a special drumming style in which a long drum leans in front of the thigh. Taarab is another music in Mombasa. It includes African and Arabian influences. In this dance style, men, women and young people dance in a frame as they sing poetry in Swahili. The people of Mombasa have a unique style of dress and most of the people speak in Swahili. Today, Taarab is still popular in coastal areas.

The dance of Kenya has become more modern due to western and foreign influences. The guitar is the most famous instrument used in music around the world. Various genres of modern music have evolved such as reggae, hip-hop, jazz, rap, Afro-Fusion and Congolese pop. All kinds of music today are very popular among Kenyan youth especially in the big cities. Some of the popular musicians today include Mighty King Kong, Eric Wainaina and Maji Maji. The spread of Christianity in Kenya also gave birth to another form of dance known as gospel music, which has spread across all denominations.
