How To Be A Well-Rounded Musician

A well-rounded musician is someone who holds a variety of musical styles and skills in such a way that each style of music becomes part of their performance. . It is the hope of all teachers to be able to encourage their students to appreciate these many skills; this is an opportunity for all students to integrate all the elements to support their music.

You may be asking yourself, “What are some of the skills involved in being a good musician?” The following list will provide some insight:

1. Play in different modes.

Learning to play in a particular work for students often does not have some time, students become angry to learn new skills. A good music teacher will allow students to try different types of music during their studies such as classical, pop, rock, jazz, country, improvisation, or original writing. It is important to remember that each student will have their own limits of musical interest or physical ability. Therefore, not all students will accept all types of music that are available to them. It is the job of the music teacher to appreciate the interests of the students and follow the instructions around the music that will speak to the students. In all the lessons I teach, I encourage all students to learn at least once a year in a style that they may not want to play: the students who learn jazz music must learn to play a piece of classical music and so on. do vice versa.

2. Reading music and playing by ear.

In the music studio of each teacher, we work with many students who all have different musical talents. Some students are strong readers, they can see the music on the page and figure out the numbers to play the music on their instruments. Other students have an interest and skill in listening to the music they play. These students pay attention to the music that surrounds them and can make these sounds in a harmonious way on their instruments.

In both cases, all students have mastered important skills, but these skills are only partially successful. In my own journey, I learned the necessary steps to combine the skills of listening to my playing while reading the lyrics on the page. This combination creates not only the quality of the performance, the sense of performance by listening to the music created creates an additional dimension that goes beyond what has been write on the page.

3. Enjoy working in team setting and solo setting

Pianists are trained from the first lesson to work as soloists. Let’s face it, the piano is an instrument that can hold its own, it is a lone wolf. I remember in high school having the opportunity to play music in various groups. I am a trombone player in my high school concert band, I am a piano player as well as my school music choir.

I also worked a summer job as a musician for a local theater company playing keyboard 2 parts (synthesizers, strings, etc.). These activities are so fun to do the same exercises that I do on the piano. As a result of practicing the solo on my different trombone at home, I only played one melodic line. These activities (at times) are tedious, he is lonely. However, when all the members of the concert group are gathered together or for a performance, all the pieces come together to create beautiful music.

Encouraging students to join groups, work together in small groups, or play duets are many ways and challenges that will enhance their learning environment. All musicians have the opportunity to enjoy working together in a group to create music that benefits each other. It’s also a lot of fun!

End

I hope that all music teachers, music students, and parents get more opportunities to make music to be useful, your life will be useful.
