Famous Cynics and Things They Say

“Cynicism” is actually an ancient Greek concept. Using the definition of cynicism, the most famous cynic would be the 4th century philosopher Antisthenes. (But then again, how famous is it? I’ve never heard of it, and I even studied philosophy in college.) The classic version of cynicism repudiated pa style. The classic cynics were interested in goodness and simplicity in all aspects of their lives. Cynicism, in this sense, is an early example of asceticism.

I like what Antisthenes said? “I’d rather be angry than happy.”

That’s some hardcore philosophy right there.

Modern day famous Cynics

The classical definition of cynicism is only used by philosophers today. In today’s usage, cynicism is simply a self-centered attitude. One of the common words used to describe the modern cynic is “jaded.” When you describe someone as cynical, you are usually referring to their tendency to believe the worst of others.

When I think of cynics in today’s usage, I think of people like Howard Stern, Donald Trump, and George Carlin. Other famous cynics include Richard Nixon, Gordon Gekko, and Snake Plissken.

One of the most recent comments from Howard Stern shows his cynicism: “Just the mere mention of Jay Leno’s name makes me want to throw up.”

It’s hard to think of someone who doesn’t have more faith in entertainment than Jay Leno, but Howard Stern, in his cynical style, is seen by such a charming person. He saw Jay Leno as a guy who insulted Conan O’Brien and who pushed Carson out The Tonight Show in a merciful way.

Coming up with the famous cynical quote from Gordon Gekko didn’t take long. “Desire is good.” What else needs to be said?

George Carlin managed to be aggressive, funny, and exciting at the same time, which is no small feat. My favorite cynical George Carlin quote? “Think how stupid a person is, and know that half of them are even stupider than that.”

Richard Nixon said, “All changes are being resisted because the bureaucrats have a vested interest in the conflict they have.” Nixon, cynical? Nah.

But is cynicism an appropriate way of life? Will it make you happier? Can cynicism lead to the improvement of anyone’s life?

Some cynics will argue that cynicism is just a matter of reality, and the truth can and will improve the lives of yourself and others. I wonder if Mother Teresa, an important non-critic, would agree with that sentiment.
