My grandmother has the best Bread Pudding Recipe without a doubt. It is still one of my favorite desserts. Imagine my surprise when I first went to New Orleans to find all the cakes were not the same!

There are many variations of this dessert. My grandmother’s version is a variation on a traditional dessert popular in British Cuisine. It is called bread and butter pudding and is often confused with bread pudding. Cubed bread put in a pan and then covered with an egg mixture to make a custard. After it is baked, the bread rises to the top to become a “crust” like topping. It tastes similar to French toast. The egg mixture forms a rich custard pudding on the bottom. Of course, my grandmother added her secret spices to give this sweet nutmeg flavor. It’s amazing!

Louisiana bread pudding is made differently and looks good. The common ingredient is stale bread, but that’s the last similarity. The bread pudding consistency is similar to a moist and warm cake with a nice vanilla, whiskey, or rum sauce. The flavor is heavenly and if you get the chance to visit New Orleans, this is a MUST have dessert that is served at many restaurants.

The following recipe, a specialty of my sister New Orleans, is a dessert that is requested at holidays, parties or any special occasion. The secret of this recipe is the bread. Stale French bread is the best. Use a long narrow glass, if available. No matter how big the pot is, it’s always empty by the end of our family gathering!

The Best Bread Pudding Recipe

Ingredients

6-8 cups of stale bread, broken into cubes

1 has evaporated milk

2 cups of sugar

8 tablespoons butter, melted

3 gardens

2 tablespoons of vanilla

1 large fruit cocktail, drained

3/4 can be condensed milk

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1 cup raisins

The instructions

Add milk, butter, eggs, vanilla, sugar, nutmeg. Fold in the bread and stir. The mixture should be very moist.

Add fruit cocktail and raisins. Mix well. Pour mixture into 9×13 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 1 hour or until golden brown. Serve warm with whiskey sauce.

You can leave out the raisins. Try adding blueberries, peaches, or apples.

Although my grandmother’s recipe is still one of my favorite desserts, I can definitely say that this is the Best Recipe – New Orleans Style!
