The Central Irony of An Outpost of Progress

The Declaration of Progress is a story by Conrad that shows that the control of progress is necessary for the well-being of people. Two white men, Kayerts and Carlier were sent to a trading post in the heart of Africa. Their job is to oversee the collection of ivory at the station. In a strange land, with different customs and different people, Kayerts and Carlier are essentially isolated- they depend on each other for any profitable company.

In this history Conrad reveals how different men are if they don’t have the strict control of society to discipline them. Kayerts and Carlier were easily seen when they were away, waiting for things to happen on their own, leaving themselves to their fate. They can’t improve their livelihoods, they don’t see any business and are set on a path of diminishing returns.

In the end, we see that these two men, who once called each other ‘my friend’, are consumed by mistrust and fight over many small things. When a man kills another person out of a conflict and cannot face the consequences of his action, he kills himself.

‘To deal effectively with material problems requires more peace of mind and courage than most people imagine.’ Conrad shows us how these two people are not able to maintain a good life when they are on their own just because they are separated from a society with its benefits and punishments. ‘they…don’t know how to use it to secure their freedom’.

The main point of the story is that these two people have been sent from a European country to ‘dark’ Africa. Their mission is to bring ‘light, and religion and business to the darkness of the world’. It is ironic how instead of achieving this goal, men fall prey to the dark forces of ‘pure unmitigated savagery’, ‘primitive nature’ and ‘primitive man’. Men lose the values that civilization has taught them and harbor dark forces within themselves that the shackles of society have long oppressed.

This pessimism is a theme that runs through many of Conrad’s novels. Notable among them are Heart of Darkness and Lord Jim. In both stories we see examples of how men who were placed in colonial outstations succumb to a life of degradation.
