How to Make Gray and Brown Paint Using Primary Colors

This name was presented by Doctors as a challenge, so how can a painter defend it? My first reaction is to wonder why anyone would bother, when more subtle and harmonious changes can be achieved in other ways. I can see how it would work but I haven’t tried it for sure. So, still in my night dress, I slipped out to the studio this morning and tried. See what you think of my results, below.

And for readers who are taking the first steps on their journey to become an artist, I will add some definitions as we go.

  • So, What is a Neutral Hue?

Neutral hues: Neutrals can be classified as Grays or Browns. In the knowledge of hands, they are a number of subtle variations of color used throughout a picture. However, they are able to do it by combining our goals. Here’s how:

1) Make it gray

The easiest way to achieve Gray by mixing the three main elements is this: Mix equal parts of Blue and Red, making the blood red. In the mixture add small amounts of Yellow until dark Gray appears. To increase its Chroma* you can – carefully – add a small amount of White.

*What is Chroma?

This value refers to the darkness or lightness of the color.

2) Make Browns

Add equal amount of Blue and Yellow, resulting in green color. Into the mixture add small amounts of Red until you achieve a Brown fit. For example, you may want Brown at low intensity or Chroma for your current photo.

It would seem obvious to add White to your new Brown mix. But this would be a huge mistake. Instead, add more Yellow.

  • How to avoid mud

All these combinations should appear on your palette, using the palette knife. This is the one and only way to achieve a ‘clean’ color combination, important when you use Gray or Brown. In the excitement of creating a new image, it is very easy to reach for a brush and start mixing paint directly on your canvas. Despite what you see in Hollywood movies about famous artists, you can not get all the color of the bristles by wiping your brush on a cloth or rinse it in turps. The residue of the paint will end up in the new mixture and turn into mud.

TIP. I encourage you to get into the habit of using your brush to lay on the paint, not mix it.

  • Another way to become Neutrals

You can easily make Neutrals from the colors you use in your current photo. For example, if you are painting a landscape with a storm above, you would use Cobalt Blue mixed with White in the sky background. If you want to make Gray to define more clouds, you can do this:

  • Take some of your Cobalt Blue, mix it with its Complement* – Burnt Sienna – and you will get a light gray tone that you can vary by mixing in some White.

* What is the Complement?

This is the color that is the opposite of Dominant* on the Color Wheel. For example, the complement – or difference – of blue-green is yellow-green.

* What is Dominant Hue?

You already guessed this, right? It is the color or Hue used most in the images you work with. So, if your artwork is graphic and you need to improve the content of the hair color with dark but medium Brown, try this:

  • Mix an Earth Red, such as Burnt Sienna – which you have already used for the skin-tones in your portrait – with Ultramarine Blue to create a deep but neutral brown.

When you want to make Neutrals, from Leaders or other ways, experimenting is the only way to find the best combination for your personal style and choice of elements. One more thing is the fun you will have.(C)Dorothy Gauvin
