How to Transcribe an Audio or Video File With Bad Sound Quality

How to Get the Most Out of Dodgy Audio

I have worked as a transcriptionist for the past eight years and have learned quite a few tips on how to get the best out of a bad voice.

Here are just a few:

· Turn it on! I use Express Scribe transcription software and there are many options for tuning bad audio. The first thing I tried was the channel toolbar. Voice dictation often involves reading from the floor. Using the channel bar of Express Scribe, you can change the dB (volume) of two audio channels. This can help make the speaker’s voice stand out. For speakers that are quiet, or far away, a better option may be to Add Volume Boost in the Special Audio Settings. This can be used if the volume needs more power than the main controller gives you. Added Volume Boost increases volume by 10%.

· Fine tune it! For less noisy sounds, there are other special sounds in the Express Scribe software. For noisy or muddy sounds, you can ‘Reduce Background Noise’ or use ‘High Pass Filter’. Reducing the background noise should be your first choice if the speaker can be heard but is able to drive in a car, sit in a restaurant, or rustling books when he speaks. In this function, Express Scribe distinguishes the sound by volume, so if the volume of the background noise is almost equal to the speech, using the High Pass Filter will be a better choice. The High Pass Filter distinguishes sound from sound so here, only sound above 450Hz is kept in the sound. This is very important for removing ‘muddy’ sounds.

· Skip it. When you’re typing and can’t hear a word, it’s very tempting to press the foot pedal and hear the same word over and over again. The truth is that by doing this, you are really making your job difficult by using the word out of context. Try to fill in the blank and then listen to the end of the sentence, or even the next few sentences. Maybe that word will be repeated, and if not, you still do your part to influence it by deciding, ‘Who is the real word from this sentence?’

· Give time. Ever noticed that writing seems to be easier to moderate into sound? Sometimes it takes a while to get used to the speaker’s voice or pick up the jargon. If you notice that you’re getting a lot of slurs during the first five minutes or so of your pitch, don’t hang on to it. Remember you [unclears] and go to type. You will find many times when you go back to it later, you will have adjusted to your speaker’s voice, tone and style and will be able to catch that message more easily. Also, listening to a word over and over again can give you a kind of mental boost. It can help to just take a break from finishing your typing and go back with a clear mind.

· Share it. If you have someone to attend, ask them to listen. Two heads are better than one and you will be surprised how good this method is.

· Approximate. – Well, yes. These tips tend to work well for industry-specific jargon. If you think a word is a company name, a product or a specific business, it can be very useful to just type it in the phone in Google and see what comes up. We all know that if you use the Autocomplete function in Google, the search engine gives you suggestions. Watch this message as you type each letter and see which one looks right. If one does, click on it and check the definition to see if it makes sense in the context of your notes. Instead, type your words, and see what spelling correction Google comes up with. This method is brilliant for finding the correct prescriptions for drugs during medical work. Be careful, however, that you check the meaning, spelling, and accuracy of the word, and listen to it one more time in the voice, just to be sure.

So if you are offering recording services, you can be sure that with these tips you can get the best out of the audio files.
