Formal and Informal Page Layouts Formats for Designing

A page layout is the art of arranging or arranging text and images (drawings, symbols, pictures, etc.) on a page or pages to create the desired effect and satisfied. A well-designed page attracts the reader’s attention and presents the product in an easy-to-read manner. Today’s website offers the Graphic Designer with many options that make his work interesting, efficient and unique.

i. Formal / Symmetrical layout:

This is a format that is divided into two equal parts to achieve balance. It is done when an imaginary central line divides the process and each side of it has an equal number of copies and drawings. It shows clearly and firmly. The formatting “toolbar” in the computer contains commands or functions that help designers in organizing their page layouts such as in typing their work according to specifications. Examples are fair, unfair and neutral layouts.

• Straightness: In this arrangement, all the lines have the same length and are made to follow a straight line from left to right or flow from left to right. Word spacing is adjusted so that each line fills all the measurements. It is the most common and easy to read format. However, its demerit is that it has many hyphens.

• Unfair: Lines of this type are flushed left and rugged right or flushed right and rugged left. The flush left is common and easy to read but the flush right is loud and hard to read.

• Centered: Lines in this arrangement tend to be rugged at both ends. The center line of an imaginary vertical line makes it symmetrical. It is a good layout format for headlines and certificates.

ii. Informal Layout

It is also known as Asymmetrical Layout. This type of paper has a lot of flaws. Each side has an equal amount of text and graphics. The informal balance gives the artist the freedom in placing various forms and elements of the design using personal ideas and taste. It is difficult to read. Examples of informal layouts are contour, run-around and inclined layouts.

• Contour: In this style, each side has an equal amount of print and graphics in an undulating form (moving in a wavy pattern).

• Run Around: In this format, each side of the layout has an equal amount of text and graphics in circular form.

• Inclined: In this layout style, each side of the layout has uneven copy and illustrations that are slanted to the left or right (diagonal pattern).
