Study Skills, Find Your Learning Style

Below are a few things to look into in order to maximize your brain potential:

Find your learning style and take advantage of it.

(To Truly grasp this concept, find the link at the end of this article…)

There are different types of learners:

The visual learners learn best when they read and write, and when they are shown charts, graphs, and tables. These learners have to “see the whole picture” before they can effectively take in new information. The auditory learners find listening to tapes or memorizing aloud very effective. They are also more inclined to ask questions and participate in debates. Lectures work well for them. Lastly, there are the kinesthetic learners who are more physical and have to act out what their mind needs to process. They learn best while doing some sort of physical activity.

As soon as you determine which learning style works best for you, develop techniques on how to play off your potential. For instance, if you are the ‘visual type,’ and you’re scheduled to have an exam on “Decolonization Movements after World War II”, visit the library to look for time lines which could help you visualize the important events and thus enhance your learning.

Learning intellectually is using only one resource that you have. If you conscript all your resources then you will use your visual brain, your auditory brain, your metaphors and the tools which will embed the information into the parts of your brain’s filing system for quick easy retrieval.

Different ways to learn:

The way a typical class room is set up is you sit at a desk, and follow the teachers’ presentation for hours, days, weeks then are examined on it, and they give you some references and send you on your way.

A good friend of mine took some classes with me, during class she would never take many notes, just listen and process, me on the other hand had to scribble down everything and hope for the best when revision time came along. I would hope that I could remember what he/she was on about when it came time to revise for the exam and make sense of my notes. This girl I thought was amazing, didn’t even take that much time to study for exams, she went in remembering everything all the things the lecturer said during class. I would never steal any of her thunder for the results she produced, they really were amazing, I simply just now know how and why she managed.
