A 90 Minute Activity for New Year’s Eve

You can spend more than 90 minutes, and maybe you can spend less time, but if you will look at your New Year’s calendar and give yourself 90 minutes to do the following, you will be very happy that you did. (and it will give you a reason to celebrate).

Find a quiet place to do this work. You will need a piece of paper and something to write with. You may need your calendar and a cup of coffee or your favorite beverage. You won’t need internet or any other technology, I promise. In fact, part of the cost is to disconnect from your property and connect with yourself.

Here’s how I want you to spend the 90 minutes you have left.

1. Looking back on last year (20 minutes)

Reflect on the events of the year, successes and disappointments. Write your thoughts on your paper. Write down the highlights of the year, new friends, and friends you lost or lost. There should be no real agenda here, just take the time to think and write about the past year. Your calendar will help you remember.

This is a pure review – not everything in your year will be perfect, so keep the year full – happiness and sadness, joy and sorrow, success and failure disappointed.

2. Take time to be thankful (20 minutes)

Next, focus on the good things in your life, the things you are grateful for. The year in review should give you many things to be thankful for, and even if you had a difficult year, you will be able to identify many things to be thankful for. But don’t stop with last year! There are things big and small to be thankful for, all around us! Write them all, allow yourself to find and see things, people, situations and thoughts.

This time is designed to give you perspective and to get you thinking as you prepare for the next exercise. And if you put yourself in this, I guarantee that you will be happy when you move to the third level.

3. Looking forward (20 minutes)

Think ahead to your year. Remember the things you’re waiting for, whether it’s dinner with friends, or a vacation you’ve planned. This can include two things you know the year holds and a list of things you want to happen in the next twelve months. This is a chance to let your mind, heart and soul be free.

Use this time to create and describe the year you want to have. Remove the restrictions and let the ink flow on the paper. This list is not necessarily complete or exhaustive. Write down what comes to you in the order in which the words come.

4. Choose your focus (20 minutes)

With our understanding you have achieved, think about the next year in a more thoughtful way. Your goal now is to find a word that will capture your thoughts and feelings for the coming year. What words will move you and remind you of what you have now? What word will help you create the New Year as much as you described? What words will help you focus on the best things to create in the coming year?

There is no perfect word here; just start writing the words when they come to you. At the end of ten minutes, choose the one who called you. You may want to “try this word on” and live with it for a day or so. Chances are if it doesn’t fit, you will identify new, better words in a few days.

5. Write a letter to yourself (10 minutes)

This may seem strange, but do it. Get another paper, and write yourself a letter. This is the letter you wrote as if it were written 360 days from now. In other words, you are writing to yourself about the year you are about to live!

Write this letter describing your accomplishments and the things you have done that have brought joy to you and others. Make this the best letter – the letter you love to receive. The goal is to get it a year from now and make it a part of your thinking about next year. Put the letter in a self-addressed envelope and type it, then give it to a friend to return next December. Write on the outside of the envelope, “Do not open until New Years.”

This is your exercise and my hope is that even if you fix it, you will try it. By now you may have decided that it will not be necessary to do it on New Year’s Eve, but I recommend that you do it then – psychologically it is a good time to do it!

You might want me to mention goal setting, and while I’m a big fan of it, I haven’t taught it specifically in this project. However, this activity will be a good starting point for setting goals for the coming year. Take your notes from these activities and you’ll have a big head start when you think about setting specific goals for the coming year – and with a head start, get the job done quickly.
