Welwitschia – The Bizarre Native Plant of the African Desert

The world is full of strange and wonderful plants and animals. However, the plant that I will tell you about is undoubtedly one of the most unusual that you have heard of. The welwitschia is an unusual plant with unusual characteristics, an unusual growth cycle, and a life that will pass between you and your descendants. Let me introduce you to an amazing African plant.

The welwitschia mirabilis is in the desert of West Africa, especially in the countries of Namibia and Angola. This exotic plant can be found hunched over the desert sand, its leaves sprawling around a stocky woody base. A mature welwitschia in the wild will live around eight, maybe nine hundred years, and it is still growing today.

Perhaps the most unique feature of welwitschia is its constitution. An adult welwitschia looks like a group of long rope-like leaves around a bowl of rough wood. In fact, however, welwitschia only has two real leaves, the only pair it ever grows. When they grow, the leaves lengthen, eventually reaching 2-3 meters long. At the same time, the heavy desert winds thrash the lower leaves of the plants against the ground regularly enough to fray them into thin slices. At first glance the strands may appear to be separate leaves; indeed people who know that the plant has only two leaves are often confused by the quality. The bowl-shaped tree in the place is the age of the body of the welwitschia, which is short, grows slowly to a large one around the plant.

The welwitshcia is famous for its good life. As I said before, one of these plants can live for hundreds of years. Remarkably, during his life, welwitschia leaves grow continuously. This fact actually earned this plant a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as “The World’s Slowest Growing Plant”.

A young welwitschia starts out with a short woody stem from which it sprouts two small leaves. This same pair of leaves grows for years eventually breaking into the characteristic strands mentioned above. The plant eventually produces two buds that become flower stems.

Welwitschia plants are dioecious, meaning that there are separate male and female plants, so the flowers are male or female depending on the plant. These then, like the leaves, continue the life of the plant eventually becoming clusters of nectar laden flowers. The sweet nectar the flowers produce attracts the appropriate pollinating insects to separate plants. When pollinated female plants produce many seeds, but because of the special requirements for sprouting, contamination, and seed feeding, few of the seeds ever germinate or become adults.

The welwitschia is really an amazing and unique plant. Although mature plants are sought after by exotic plants, the welwitschia plant continues to thrive in the wild. In addition, many owners grow indoor varieties of welwitschia plants. Yes, the African views of nature will be around for many years to come.
