Paradise, Martial Arts, and Magnum PI

We recently got new cable installed at the house, and I’ve been busy training to learn all the new channels. So just like any guy these days, I just used to flip through the show channels to find something to watch.

Then I hit the ground running when I came across the 1980’s classic detective series, Magnum PI

During this time Magnum was fighting with some gangsters and one of his attackers pulled out nunchucks and quickly took out Magnum’s friend.

Being the smart man that he is, Magnum doesn’t rush in. Instead, he picked up an ashtray and used the ability to block multiple blows from the weapon before finally bashing the opponent unconscious with it.

For eight seasons Tom Selleck played Private Investigator Thomas Magnum, Navy Academy Graduate, former Seal and Vietnam veteran. Magnum is on the beautiful land of Tom Clancy like author Robin Masters.

In exchange for free housing on the property and being allowed to use Robins’ red Ferrari 308 GTB, Magnum maintains security with Englishman Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, a former British army Major.

If working on the property with all the good results wasn’t enough to keep Magnum busy, he did a lot of investigative work and had to deal with drug dealers, hitmen, people evil, spies, and even more jobs like divorce. I can’t think of a single private investigator or Navy guy I’ve met who wasn’t a fan of the show.

It’s important to remember that while Magnum can get into a lot of fun every week, the battle that he’s used in almost every episode is the world. self defense. And Looking back at the show Magnum clearly shows his military background. After all Magnum has dealt with the attackers using everything from combat weapons, to bottles, bats, and shotguns.

Magnum learned his martial arts skills while the military was still using the World War II combat system developed by Charles Nelson and BJ Cosneck for the Navy and Marines. These men taught martial arts for fighting and fighting, not for sport.

But Magnum is not the only one who has seen a good fight. Higgins, a veteran of more than twenty years of military service, was familiar with many martial arts, although he relied on self-defense techniques taught by Colonel William E. Fairbairn. Magnum’s friends Rick and TC also shared what they learned in the Marines in combat alongside Magnum.

Magnum was a member of SEAL Team One who operated out of Da Nang, Vietnam and served as the CIA’s Chief of Staff during the war (Magnum and his friends can often be seen wearing a baseball cap in Da Nang). Magnum did not learn to fight in a beautiful martial arts school, but on the streets of Da Nang and in the forests of Northern Vietnam. Magnum never wastes time getting into stances or trying to do special moves. Changed when he saw a threat and attacked. If he has the advantage of a gun or other weapons he uses them.

During his war Magnum and his friends escaped from the enemy prison and had to remove weapons with their own hands. On a case while searching for a kidnapped friend Magnum must fight a successful martial artist from Japan. Even though his opponent throws a lot of power kicks Magnum continues to fight until the other man is down.

Although Magnum is a fictional character there is much to be learned from him. He and his comrades are proud to have never regretted their work in Vietnam and understand the true horrors of the cold war and terrorism. They are also not satisfied. Magnum and all of his friends use sports to hold power. Higgins even joined the boys in a rescue mission in Cambodia and is still fit for action.

In Hawaii there are many arts taught to high school students, but the style used by its most famous residents is still the best. On the island is an environment as diverse as Hawaii you need to adapt to all personal protection. You cannot afford to limit your ability to protect yourself. The clever writers of the TV show realized this and kept Magnum using his fighting skills instead of participating in the karate and ninja craze of the time.
