Frankenstein And Boule De Suif – Differences Between Romanticism And Realism As Aesthetic Movements

Romanticism and Frankenstein

Romanticism in Frankenstein is evident from the control of the story that the events with the drama. There are intrigued patterns unlike the events that occur in this novel. Mary Shelley explained the story very beautifully through words and similes of what happened. The novel has an emphasis on metaphoric and exaggeration in expression.

Romanticism is based on writing in this novel where the reader is forced to create images and thoughts to hear the true nature of the situation. Mary Shelley captured the best moments and represented them through words. When readers read the text, they are able to create collective thoughts to understand new ways of interpreting the world and people of the society in which they live, the more personal is the experience, the better is the representation. However, the story of Frankenstein is not the personal experience of the author but still, he was able to create this romantic text with the beginning of the gothic elements to make it attractive and reinterpret the text read.

The novel depicts the quest for something different such as Victor Frankenstein’s quest to create a living body out of something raw. It shows romanticism by striving to create things like people. Victor Frankenstein wanted to be like God and create the unknown. Therefore, it is strange and different for him to be a dreamer willing to control the world with unattainable idealization. Romanticism, however, in Frankenstein includes efforts against the rules of humanity, setting the discourse to limits and boundaries. Along the way, Victor Frankenstein wants to cross all the limits and boundaries, regardless of the role given to him, in order to become a God-like character to achieve the impossible that brought him to the path of anxiety and overstepping. The novel describes the concept of imperfection and there is no ideal solution for any social experiment.

Romanticism suggests that the nature and plot of a story are very important for a better understanding of the text and create a good body of characters in the novel and thus, the same thing happens in Frankenstein. The characters in Frankenstein will unwrap as the reader begins to read. Each time the reader will continue reading a chapter, a new character will appear.

Plot and setting in Frankenstein mark the importance of relative themes in the novel. As a romantically gothic novel, the setting in Frankenstein is on Orkney. Orkney is a strange place with a dark, barren, rough, and greyish environment. It is a lot of dirt and dust. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein and his family live in a beautiful world of harsh reality whereas, monsters are created in Orkney. The author uses illustrations to create a contrast between the landscape of Switzerland and Orkney to help the art of the relationship between the characters and the plot.

Consider the importance of the novel as a monster, an object without speech, physical ability, and face rejection many times, trying to have a good relationship with people in society energy, environment but then quickly realizes the difference between himself and others.

The novel doesn’t have a happy ending but a strong message that doesn’t seem to accept the odds. It is impossible to fight against the rules and regulations of society. The novel belongs to an example of romanticism, stylized hugely with more fantasizing approach than reality. The story is an example for the first character and experience of romantic writers with both genres. It allows you to examine yourself, to express the most difficult needs such as impossibility. Shelley does not reflect on her own experiences in the text, instead, she raises questions for the reader about morality and ethics.

Realism and Boule de Suif

Boule de Suif, also known as fat ball, is the opposite of Frankenstein. In this story, there are many main characters with strong personality and easy to see. There is a metonymic connection between the plot and the characters. Everything is fully defined.

Maupassant began with the creation of the vision of the plot during the 19th century. It was the earliest period of the Prussian invasion when the army of French citizens began to flee from the coast. The author’s powerful tools of rhetoric Ie imagery and developing memory images enable him to express the power of imagination in this masterpiece. The author gives insight to the reader for insight. Maupassant creates a social hierarchy in the teacher that is revealed after the stress is created. The hierarchy includes two priests who rarely participate in any kind of scandal, a woman such as Boule de Suif who earns by virtue and means, a free person who follows the religious left, and a few prominent people in society. But all these social systems are lost when they are given food and drink from the impersonal Boule de Suif and then everyone is on an equal footing.

The character of Boule de Suif is a symbol of a deeper message throughout the story that is understood through his actions and not his words. Maupassant describes the horrors of her prostitution in his letters. The author also presents many criticisms that are faced by people in the teacher despite their social values in the hierarchy. The nobles seem to neglect their honor and respect when they accept the food from Boule de Suif and then they force him to do dishonesty which is the only way to get saved by the Prussian army. Maupassant describes the characteristics of greed and selfishness of people in the real world. This is the truth of human nature as corrupt and arrogant, not following the moral ground as well. Boule de Suif’s state of immorality leads to conflict as he struggles to maintain a moral code of conduct. He has rules for him and he stands up for everything he believes in. His work on the one hand is to bring the satisfaction of utilitarianism to many people but on the other hand, he refuses to sleep with the enemy and help him to free himself and his friends. At this point, it seems to be a moral problem.

At many levels in this story, reality is about control and mental illness. There is a parallel between the lowering of morals and the raising of morals of all groups in society. Maupassant wants to remind the readers to understand the perspective of the society by using realistic methods. Maupassant uses language as a symbol of thought, character, and kindness.

Boule de Suif also went through a great psychological crisis when he fulfilled the needs of the enemy through the frustration of his friends but still got nothing in return except humiliation and criticism for dishonesty. He is the antihero of the story, weak and weak. The author named her “Boule de Suif” for she is soft, fat, short, but a fringy woman.
