Alfred’s Kid’s Guitar Course – Book Review

Teaching children to play guitar presents a different challenge for every guitar teacher. Most of the time, the guitar teacher will have to do some of the methods to suit their students. A good guitar book specially designed for children will be of great help in this situation, and a book in particular is “Alfred’s Kid’s Guitar Course”so let’s see what this book has to offer.

The 140-page book is intended for children under five years of age and has colorful pages that can be enjoyed by children. After a few pages of basics such as; “Guitar Anatomy”, “Holding the Guitar” and an introduction to “Basic Musical Symbols”, students are presented with an “Activity” page where they will be asked to draw the musical symbols learned first with the importance of counting “Beats”. Unlike most method guitar books that I used to look at, the book does not start with a “Notes Reading” lesson but instead with a “Strumming” lesson. A presentation by the authors of the book is the introduction of our colorful characters; a dog, a cat and a friend Alligator who is always around to give advice to the students in every lesson.

Reading music does not begin until page 37 of the book, and by then, students have already learned the four chords in the basic position and have practiced playing them in the given songs. Page 37 continues is back to the traditional way of learning to read on all strings starting from the 1st. Action pages also appear in the guide and colorful icons are always there to help. Students will have to connect a note and match the chord on page 43 and this will continue with each new note learned.

A “Four String” version of the chords lesson is first introduced on page 79 and this is then followed by an introduction to the “Bass-Chord” as well as playing with “Dynamics” to train the core. learn to add “Feel” to their game. .

Pros:

A guide to teaching “strumming” lessons before “writing” reading is a great way to make lessons fun for kids. It’s easier then trying to memorize the notes and find them on the guitar before they can sound useful. The included CDs are sound quality and are “enhanced” CDs that have additional features when playing on a computer. The colorful cartoons have done their job to make the instructions interesting and the colorful pages make the book exciting and this will attract the attention of young people.

Cons:

Although the book says “Completed” in the cover, it is not a complete guitar book because even after completing the book, students only learn “four chords” at best . Although it comes with good sound and improved CDs, guidance from a sports teacher is still needed to make the lessons effective for children, especially for five-year-olds. .

Having gone through the book and learned the pros and cons of it, I still think it’s a good place to start for kids who want to learn guitar for its ease.
