Classroom Management Part VII – How to Win Your Students’ Hearts

Although you may teach high school, you are not in high school. You’re not running for Room President or Prom King. Also, as a teacher, you have to do things that people don’t like – like giving consequences or giving bad grades. As mentioned in a previous article: a good teacher is not Ms. Congeniality does. However, what teacher does not want to have a good relationship with his students?

This, the seventh in a series of eight articles on classroom management, focuses on building relationships. Use the following strategies to win your students’ trust and their hearts.

LOVE them. Give specific and honest compliments. Instead of saying, “You did a great job,” say, “I appreciate the way you sat through a two-hour presentation.”

TIME AND TIME. Get student tips for movies, trips, and activities. Make choices, or revise the curriculum and content, based on their feedback.

Write to them. On the assignments, point out what your students did well. A good report on the assignment – no matter the grade – will give your students confidence.

warn them. Before the student “presents,” remind them of the behavior and help them find ways to avoid the consequences. Setting your students up for success in this way will show them that you have their best interests in mind.

THAT’S WHO. Or, to use the more correct expression, give them results. Although it may seem counter-intuitive, putting the result as your classroom rules will feel desirable and consistent. This will keep the students safe.

MONEY FOR THEM. Just as you can warn them about bad behavior, you should reward students for doing what is expected. An end-of-the-semester party, a special trip, or a choice of activities is a great way to do this.

Having a good relationship with your students and managing your classroom effectively is not a collaborative effort. In fact, building relationships is an important part of classroom management. When you use the tips above, you will both build a strong relationship with your students and be sure of your classroom management.
