The History of Candles! Did You Know?

Candles have come a long way since their earliest known date from around the fourth century BC At one time, candles were one of the only electrical appliances. The ancient Egyptians used rushes soaked in fat (animal fat) and called rushlights. During the time of the Roman Empire tallow was melted until it was liquid then poured over fibers of hemp or flax. The Chinese and Japanese made candles by using wax from insects and seeds and molded into paper tubes. In India, taper candles are made by skimming wax off boiling cinnamon. Beeswax candles came in the Middle Ages, but the supply was limited, making it very expensive for anyone but the upper class.

Candle making, as we know, made it for the first time in the thirteenth century when chandlers (master candle makers) went door to door making candles with high quality or beeswax . In America, Native Americans made their first candles by using oily fish on a forked stick. The ancient missionaries would get their wax from the temper of the Cerio tree. The early settlers of America discovered that they could make the fruit from the bayberry shrub and create a nice smelling, good candle. Unfortunately, the process to make this wax is very difficult and tedious. During the 19th century, the first patented candle making machine was invented. This allows all houses, regardless of class, to have them.

Not only do we use candles as the main source of light, but they are still an important part of our lives. We use them for many of our celebrations, to decorate our homes, to smell our homes, and to create a warm atmosphere in our homes during special, or romantic, occasions. How can romance be without candles?
