One Band, One Sound – The Essence of Teamwork

I got geeked! As I sat in the dark theater sipping my Coca-Cola and munching on my buttered popcorn, I felt a thrill come over me as I waited for the showing of the 20th Century Fox movie “Drumline”. I sat back in my seat and was overwhelmed by the sound, movement and movement in the film. I enjoyed a stress-free and fun afternoon watching Nick Cannon, Orlando Jones, Leonard Roberts, Zoe Saldana, Jason Weaver, and J. Anthony Brown demonstrate what life is like for kids “who march to the beat of his drum” fit. in an environment that requires him to the same as his team.

It took a while for Nick Cannon to connect to the “one group, one voice” philosophy of his marching band. As a matter of fact, he had his character removed from the army before he realized that the meaning of the “one group, one voice” concept was all about work.

I got a kick out of that movie! It’s a great movie that is not only entertaining, but teaches some good lessons, too. I walked away from “Drumline” internalizing the “one group, one voice” philosophy. It made such an impact on me that I wrote it in my journal back in 2005 and now I focus my article on today.

“One group, one voice” is a smart way to tell us all about the importance and value of cooperation. It can be used for any situation where unity is important in our life.

“One group, one voice” tells us that unity is the concept of people working together to achieve a desired goal.

“One team, one voice” illuminates the importance of the following characteristics that must be present in a successful team, such as:

1) Vision

2) Communication skills

3) Listening skills

4) Initiative

5) Support

6) Be focused

7) Religion

8) Cooperation

9) Respect

Vision is needed in order to move our team from where they are to where we want them to be. Understanding the vision of our team, company or project helps us shift into gear and complete our necessary tasks in order to turn our dreams into reality.

Communication skills allow our team to deliver information that is easily received and understood. Sharing ideas, giving opinions and giving feedback gives us the opportunity to express our message so that it is clearly received by our teammates.

Listening skills are important because they allow us to express genuine interest in the conversation. Whether we teach, modify, teach, demonstrate, or affirm, listening skills empower us to our team which keeps us in alignment with the team’s vision.

Initiative is the force that moves our team forward and allows the strengths and skills of one team member to shine through to the team as a whole. Support is the help our team members give to each other which helps build relationships within our team. Focus is necessary to support the energy and effort of the team towards the end of the vision of our team, project or company.

Trust helps members to release barriers and open communication with each other. It is the motivation behind the group moving forward on an agreement. Collaboration connects our partners to each other for a common purpose. When there is trust and vision, collaboration joins us together to create great results for the team.

Respect guides our team through challenges and conflicts. It gives us “objectivity, non-judgement and care for the rights, values, beliefs and tools” of our team. Despite personal conflicts or difficult times, respect for each other and the goals of our group help us to be “one group, one voice”.

“Teamwork is something you do every day,” says Susan M. Heathfield, a financial writer at About.com.

I agree. What we need to consider is that not all of the above characteristics are necessary for effective teamwork and not that we work as a team every day; but, we must remember to uphold the concept of “one group, one voice” by:

o Provide regular training to teach our team processes for leveraging the project, work or role;

o Conduct regular team meetings to review the progress of our projects;

o Hold more fun events including business meetings as a way to strengthen relationships among our team; and

o Celebrate our team’s success in public – for others to know and see.

It’s not easy to work with people who are different from you, especially when there are personal conflicts. As shown in the movie “Drumline”, people can play a part in keeping the participants apart. However, these differences can still be a hidden force for good work.

Just remember, even though personalities may be conflicted and different, as long as vision, communication, listening skills, initiative, support, focus, trust, cooperation, and respect, the partners will become “one group, one. voice”.
