Change Your Life Using the Inner Technologies of Intention and Prayer

If you don’t know where you’re going, you’re not likely to get there. – Yogi Berra

Nothing in life is static; our bodies, psyches, relationships and circumstances are subject to constant change. Yet without intentional work in new directions, we are likely to find that our new inner and outer forms replicate existing patterns. “I remember the day I first realized I had married my father,” one client told me ruefully. Since her father had been sadistic and abusive, it was a very unhappy day. Yet it also galvanized her healing process, helping her focus on the intentions and prayers she needed to use in order to transform her life.

Setting a clear intention is the first step in bringing about any desired change, whether physical or non-physical. Asking for help from larger sources – a practice traditionally called “prayer” – is a way of exponentially increasing our power to bring about that change. (If you don’t resonate with the word “prayer,” feel free to substitute your own word for requesting the help of your larger self or guides.) Together, intention and prayer are a super-technology, a powerfully effective force for change, healing and transformation.

“Intention” is the process by which we purposefully internally orient ourselves in a given direction. For instance, when we get into our cars in the morning to drive to work, our intention to drive to work plays a huge part in our getting there. If we got into our cars with no particular intention, we might not go anywhere at all – or we might find ourselves randomly driving until we ran out of gas. Many of us do exactly this in our lives!

Setting an intention helps us use our personal power more efficiently. Yet no matter how efficient we are, no human being can, on her own, lift a ton, scale a sheer cliff-face, or turn water into wine. That’s where our guides’ help comes in.

Our inner teachers are always willing to assist us – since they are us, on another level of being. However, their ability to help is limited by their respect for our free will. This means that until we specifically request and open ourselves to their assistance, they will most often stand back, watching us compassionately, but not interfering. Prayer is a way of consciously requesting their assistance, signaling that we are open to their help.

Some of us are stubborn, proud do-it-yourselfers. (I know something about that; family lore has it that the first two phrases I uttered were “Let Ruthie do it” and “Let me do it by my self.”) However, there is no good reason for us to refuse the assistance of higher forces, and no spiritual merit that accrues to us from doing so. We do not benefit from making things harder for ourselves, any more than a person dragging heavy objects around her back yard would benefit from refusing to use a brand-new wheelbarrow. In fact, working with intention gives us access to the non-physical equivalent of that wheelbarrow, while prayer can call to our sides an invisible team of winged horses. If you stop and listen, you may almost be able to hear them now, snorting, pawing and neighing just outside your door…

Intending and praying gives us access to tremendous power. Yet the energy we put into our intentions and prayers is very important in determining whether or not they will manifest. If, for instance, we intend and pray out of a place of fear and despair, or attempt to control or manipulate ourselves, others or our lives, we are working against our own strength – like trying to drag a wheelbarrow uphill by the wrong end. When we pray and intend from a deep experience of connection, we are using these power tools according to their design, making them much more effective. Therefore, we sometimes need to begin our work by intending and praying for a greater sense of connection to ourselves, our lives and our guides. That will serve as a sturdy foundation for all other intentions and prayers. Here are some more tips for using this inner technology effectively.

Guidelines for Effective Use of Intention and Prayer

1. Your intentions and prayers must be consonant with your higher self, and with the fulfillment of your inner design.

2. Your intentions and prayers must be as specific as possible in essence, yet as flexible as possible in form. They must focus on the essence of what is most important to you, rather than on specific ways of achieving it. For instance, it will be more effective to pray, “Please help me attract, receive and feel more love in my life,” rather than, “Please make so-and-so love me.”

3. You must give your intentions and prayers concentrated daily attention. Think about the other things you do daily – for instance, perhaps you make coffee every morning, or put on clean clothes. Isn’t whatever you are intending at least as important as those activities?

4. Your intentions and prayers must remain dynamic – i.e., they must acknowledge and emerge from what you’re feeling in the moment, rather than becoming static or rote.

5. Your intentions and prayers must address your desires from various angles: e.g., “Please help me to attract and experience more of X in my life,” and “Please help be become willing and able to dissolve my blocks to receiving more of X in my life,” and “Please help me recognize and appreciate all the ways and places I already have X in my life,” and “Please help me heal whatever internal factors prevent me from attracting, receiving or retaining X in my life.”

6. As you work with your intentions and prayers, it’s important to invite awareness of all of the parts of yourself which are not currently in agreement with those intentions, and consciously work (and intend and pray) to heal or shift those parts of yourself.

7. When you fully affirm your commitment to being here on earth, at this time, in this body, in this life, you turbo-charge your intentions. On the other hand, if you haven’t completely said Yes to life, your wheelbarrow will have a flat tire and the wings on your winged horses will be clipped.

8. Self-criticism or a harsh inner environment also nullifies the effect of your intentions and prayers. There’s an inherent contradiction in asking the universe for support, while disparaging rather than supporting yourself. If you find yourself in this bind, simply make your self-criticism itself a focus of your work with intention and prayer. For example:

“Please help me shift my habit of internal harshness. Help me cultivate an internal atmosphere of gentleness and respect. Help me release whatever keeps me in the contraction of self criticism. Help me see myself with eyes of compassion. Help me to love myself the way the compassionate universe loves me.”

Or:

“I decide, desire, wish and intend to become able to hold, view and address myself with love, gentleness and compassion. I choose and decide to release the harsh energies I am presently carrying. I ask for the help of my guides in releasing these energies and cultivating a loving, supportive environment throughout my inner being.”

There are many different ways to pray; each carries its own particular energy, and offers its own kind of medicine. You may find that one style resonates more with you at a certain period in your life, or when you’re working with a certain issue; at another point, even a few minutes later, a different style might feel more medicinal. You can experience the different energies of each style simply by trying them out.

Since prayer is a dynamic conversation, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to do it. You can choose which kind of conversation to engage in, just as you choose the way you speak with your human friends. Your guides won’t judge you, and they’re willing to help no matter what. But some communication styles may feel more powerful and opening for you in a given moment than others.

For the sake of this example, let’s imagine that you’re asking your guides to help you embrace the truth that the locus of power lies within you, and assume a posture of full self-responsibility. Here are some ways you might pray:

Declaration: I decide, I choose, I declare my willingness and readiness, I affirm my plan and intention, to take on full and complete self-responsibility. I consciously and deliberately harness and make use of the unseen forces to assist me…

Blessing: May I become more and more able to be fully self-responsible. May all the powers of the universe assist me in making this change, and in opening all the levels of my being to this change…

Request: Please help me become able to become fully self-responsible. Please help me to open all the levels of my being to this change; help me to heal and release what must be healed and released…

Affirmation: I am becoming more and more fully self-responsible. I sense and feel and affirm my own power to make this change, and acknowledge the support I am receiving from larger forces in readying me to make this change…

Assuming that you have aligned your inner being with your prayer in the ways already described, all prayer styles are equally effective. “Requesting” is one of my favorite approaches, as it keeps me connected to the act of requesting help, but “declaring” allows me to acknowledge the critical role of my own agency and will. The “Blessing” style has a lovely, gentle feel to it, and the “Affirmation” style works well when I need to galvanize myself into inner change.

Personally, I’ve found that beginning the day with prayer is a great way to set my internal compass. When we awaken each morning, there is a little window of time in which we are still close to the power of the dream world and all of its guidance; praying at this time of day seems to impact me even more deeply than at other times of day. Here is a morning prayer I like to use.

Daily Prayer

I ask for help in embracing this day, and remaining close to myself and my highest intentions during each moment of the day. I ask for help in appreciating my body, my beating heart, my breathing lungs, my seeing eyes, my hearing ears, my functioning limbs. If any parts of my body are not functioning well, I ask for help in respecting their limitations, and treating them and myself with tenderness and compassion. I also ask and intend to honor and celebrate all of the parts of my body that are working well, allowing myself to remember and hold close the intricate workings of my cells, bones, muscles and organs, the beauty and complexity of the ways in which they are both supporting me, and supported by me, in every moment.

I also ask that the community of working parts within my physical form help me remember, celebrate and appreciate the larger communities of which I am a part – the communities of my household, family, circle of friends, town, city, ethnic group, species, nation, planet, or any other communities to which I may be connected. Although each of these communities has its frailties and imperfections, just as my body does, I ask for help in seeing their beauty and strength as clearly as I see those aspects in need of healing or development; I ask for the vision that can enable me to feel joy and wholeness within myself, within my body, and within the world, even as I know that I and all other aspects of my world are continually changing and evolving, and being supported to evolve.

If I sit or stand or walk outside, I ask for help in being present to the beauty of the world, opening my senses to all of the life forms and consciousness around me. If there are birds in the sky or the trees, I intend to acknowledge them, to greet and salute them in their essential nature – in their life form which is so different from my own, and yet, at its core, so similar. I pray that this recognition of both our difference and our similarity fill me with appreciation and tenderness. If there are squirrels running through the grass or in the trees, I ask for help in truly taking in marvel of these creatures, too. If I live with or encounter cats or dogs, may I also salute those creatures who have chosen to transition from wildness to what we call “domestication,” so that they can live more closely with us, and teach and comfort and heal us, and exchange with us.

When I see trees, may I remember that these magnificent life-forms are constantly helping me by producing the oxygen I need to breathe; I affirm my intent to thank them, appreciating their support.

When I drink water, I ask for help in remembering the miracle of that water – where it has come from, how it has traveled to me, and how it nourishes and hydrates my tissues and cells, enters my body to rejoin the waters already living within me, purifying and cleansing me. I also thank my mouth, my lips, my tongue, my throat, and all the inner chambers and filters and organs of my body, grateful for their ability to welcome this water, to receive and make use of it for their own good and for mine.

When I eat, I thank the earth and every human being, known or unknown, through whose labor this food has come to me. I thank my nose, my mouth, my teeth, my taste buds, my stomach and all my organs of digestion and elimination for their role in helping this food enter me, nourish me, and leave me as part of the natural cycle of life. I declare my intention to make honorable use of the life force which is increased in me by way of this food. May I return this energy to the world in the form of love.

I ask for help in acknowledging, remembering and recognizing the humanity of every person with whom I interact today, even briefly: the man or woman at the gas station, the grocery store, the fellow passengers on the bus or train, the people with whom I share a household or building or neighborhood or workplace, and those with whom I speak on the phone or exchange emails or text messages. In all of my small encounters with strangers, may I recognize the full humanity of each person; may I remember that each person was once a tiny, helpless baby, who may or may not have been adequately welcomed into the world, who may or may not have received all the care he or she needed. I ask for help in silently sending compassion to her heart or his, to whatever wounds may remain there.

And in all of my encounters with people I know, friends, family members, spouse, children, co-workers or others, I ask for the same. May I be helped to see the essential beauty of each person. May I remember that at the core, each of us shares the same needs. May I allow my own humanness to radiate from me, so that others may more easily see my essential beauty, too.

And when I use the bathroom, I ask for help in looking in the mirror and greeting the person I see there as a friend. If I am tempted at any point during the day to criticize myself, I ask that life shower me with love, and help me remember that love is with me at all times, in all places, in all ways. May the memory, the knowledge, the visceral awareness of that love, reach me and soften me, move me and help me to release the harshness I have been holding against myself.

If I am tempted to criticize another person today, or find myself doing so, I ask that that same love hold me just as palpably, comforting and nourishing me. May it remind me of that place within me in which all is right with the world; may it help me to soften, to relax into the experience of being held, and to relinquish the sharp edge I have been holding against another.

I ask for help in remembering my intention to care both for myself and for others, to love myself as much as I love others in my best moments, and to love others as much as I love myself in my best moments; and to allow this love that flows from me and to me to carry me like a stream, throughout my day.

If, today, I have a difficult thing to say to another person, I ask that this stream of love help me to remain conscious and present in my own vulnerable humanity as I speak, and that it keep me able to sense and acknowledge and touch the vulnerable humanity of the other. May I speak necessary truths with clarity and kindness.

And when I make a mistake, I ask for help in acknowledging it forthrightly and quickly while also remembering my vulnerable humanness. I affirm that all human beings make mistakes, that I am allowed to make a mistake, and that even with all of my mistakes, I am still held within the loving stream of my larger self.

I ask for help in being a beacon of light today, a light that radiates equally outward, toward everyone and everything I encounter outside of myself, and inward, toward each aspect and facet of my own being. May I feel the love that is within me and around me. May I know myself as part of that love, part of the body that love inhabits in this world.
