Where Karate Comes From?

Some of the oldest records of unarmed warfare date back to Egypt as shown in hieroglyphics. This Egyptian battle spread to Greece. The Grecians combined the competition with this system to make the whole body a weapon. Many of these battles were lost as many Grecians lost their lives during the violence.

Around 1300 BC unarmed combat techniques developed in India. The process was similar to the process developed in China. This is the first foundation of all martial arts leading to the development of Karate.

The son of the Indian King named Bodhidharma (also known as Tamo or Daruma) added to the elements of oriental martial arts and Buddhism by influencing his ideas. He was the third child of King Sugandha of Southern India and because of his royal blood was trained in religious beliefs, meditation, and unarmed combat.

Until the middle ages and was not happy with the decline of Buddhism in India. Bodhidharma went to China with the purpose of spreading the philosophy of Buddhism. Entering southern China and traveling north, Bodhidharma stayed at the Shaolin temple on Mount Shao-shih in the Sung Mountains. Trying to teach the monks of the Buddhist monastery he found that they could not sleep while meditating and preaching. To get rid of the fatigue Bodhidharma taught the monks to fight without fighting as an exercise to create a good mind by healing the body.

This set the foundation for most of the arts that are known throughout the world. The Shaolin monks became known as the greatest warriors in the world. The martial arts without weapons became known as Shaolin temple boxing and then called Gung Fu or Kung Fu. As the monks matured and left the monastery, so did the fighting of Kung Fu. When Kung Fu was introduced to the people of China, it further developed and spread throughout Asia.

The people of Okinawa are looking for ways to protect themselves and counter tactics that can defeat the military’s swift and decisive attacks. It needs to be about strength and power to access the property. It was Shaolin Kung Fu that broke out and became the basis for Karate Ryu. Over the next few years the techniques of Karate Ryu were tested and proved to be suitable as a method of unarmed combat against very heavy soldiers. From the history of Karate the term Karate has been used. At this time the term Karate was defined as the Chinese hand derived from the Tang hand. Today Karate means empty hand.

As Karate Ryu was developed into a fighting style the names were given to patterns relative to the three cities of Okinawa. The word “Te” was added to the names of the cities, Naha, Shuri, and Tomari giving us the main meaning of Karate Ryu. They are Naha-te, Shuri-te, and Tomari-te.

Two of these styles, Naha-te and Shuri-te, over the years they became known as Shorei-ryu asnd Shorin-ryu. The word “Ryu” means system or style. These two styles were the first styles developed in Okinawa and have influenced the development of modern Karate now used worldwide.
