The Man Who Revolutionized Martial Arts: Bruce Lee

The man, the story, the story. Bruce Lee is far from a legend, but is a legendary man who changed the art of acting. He redesigned his core very important and precisely said that no man or woman can do it all. Today, Martial Artists can only build on that foundation and help refine his ideas. Bruce is a motivator, innovator, and creative thinker. Most importantly he is a true Martial Artist.

A Martial Artist is someone who adapts to any situation. This concept is not limited to combat or drama. It can be used in everyday life. We can use work as an example.

Let’s say you’re not doing as well as you want and know you can do better. How can you be good at your job? You are suitable for it! You listen and learn as much as you can. You go to work every day with a new goal in mind and every day you know how to achieve that goal.

As a Martial Artist, I have learned to apply what I learn in martial arts in everyday life. Bruce Lee makes this happen in his books and movies. He made his opinion heard so much that he couldn’t ignore it.

A personal challenge from me to you: Watch the movie Bruce Lee (Enter the Dragon has a great fight scene and great words from Bruce Lee)! Let me know if you think he cares and hear any of his ideas. Did it inspire you? His philosophy has inspired me in a way that it has changed my way of thinking about many things and how I go about it every day. No article about Bruce Lee is complete without a little history about him.

Brief History of Bruce Lee:

The story of Bruce Lee began on November 27, 1940 in San Francisco, California. He was born Lee Jun Fan, and is the fourth child of his father, Lee Hoi-Chuen and mother, Grace.

Lee’s father was a Hong Kong opera singer who was touring in San Francisco when he was born, which made Lee a US citizen. Three months later, the family returned to Hong Kong, which was under Japanese occupation at the time. When Lee was 12 years old, he studied at La Salle College and then transferred to St. Francis Xavier’s College, which is both a high school and a college. Lee’s father was his first martial arts instructor, he taught him the Wu style of Tai Chi Chuan at an early age. After joining the Hong Kong street team in 1954, Lee began to feel the need to improve his fighting skills. This led him to start studying Wing Chun Gung Fu in Yip Man. While there, Lee often studied under one of Yip’s top students, Wong Shun-Leung. Wong therefore had a great influence on his education. Lee studied under Yip Man until he was 18 years old. Most people don’t know how long Lee’s martial arts history is. Lee also trained in western boxing and won the 1958 boxing championship against Gary Elms by knockout in the third round. Lee also learned the art of fencing from his brother, Peter Lee (a champion in the sport). These different backgrounds led to a personal modification to Wing Chun Gung Fu, and called it a new version of the model, Jun Fan Gung Fu. In fact, Lee opened his first martial arts school in Seattle and named it Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute.

Lee began to develop a style of martial arts that was applicable to the martial arts and existed outside of the limitations and restrictions of other martial arts. It keeps what works and what doesn’t. Jeet Kune Do was born in 1965. Lee opened two more schools after moving to California, only to admit three teachers in himself. They are Taky Kimura, James Yimm Lee, and Dan Inosanto.

Bruce Lee appeared in his first film at the age of three months, playing the role of an American child in Golden Gate Girl. He made about 20 appearances in films as a child actor. In 1959, Lee got into trouble with the police. His mother, deciding that the area they live in is too dangerous for him, sends him back to the United States to live with some friends. There he graduated from high school in Edison, Washington before attending the University of Washington to study philosophy. He started teaching martial arts there as well, and that’s where he met his future wife, Linda Emery. Bruce Lee married Linda Emery in 1964. They have two children together: Brandon Lee and Shannon.

Bruce Lee made some American headlines in the TV series, Green Hornet, which aired in 1966-67. He works as Hornet’s sidekick, Kato, where he shows off his movie-friendly fighting skills. In spite of further revelations, the movie theater was a big problem and made him return to Hong Kong in 1971. In Hong Kong, he became a big star in movies. movies like Fists of Fury, Chinese Connection, and Way of the Dragon.

On July 20, 1973, Bruce Lee died in Hong Kong at the age of 32. The cause of his death was cerebral edema, which was caused by a reaction to an antibiotic that he was taking it for back pain. Controversy swelled over his death, as Lee was obsessed with the idea that he would die early, leading many to wonder if he had ever been killed. A month after Lee’s death in the United States, The Dragon came out in the United States, and it earned more than $200 million. Bruce has made a lot happen in a short time. His research and beliefs led to a worldwide revolution in Martial Arts. Today, we have Mixed Martial Arts (AKA MMA) which has taken the world by storm and thanks to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and become the fastest growing phenomenon in the world. The man to thank is Bruce Lee. His creativity and his ability to reach out to different cultures showed that the collective struggle to find what works and what doesn’t is the only way to be an Artist. Indeed.

Thanks Bruce Lee!
