How To Grow Your Own Ingredients To Make Your Own Beer

There are two main beer making ingredients that you can grow. Both hops and barley can be grown indoors if you want.

Hops is known by the name humulus. It is often called hops vines, but the term vine is wrong. The hops plant is actually a bine plant. This plant uses tough stems with hairs to help climb. They will wrap themselves around something in a clockwise fashion to grow. They grow very quickly, growing from 20cm to 50cm in a week during the growing season.

Hops are perennial plants and are mostly grown in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are easy to grow and can be grown indoors or out. Hops are sensitive to certain types of insects, so care must be taken to avoid contamination. Hops flower in summer and seedpod flowers are true hops. These can be harvested after the seeds are established, usually in August. The hops are then air dried for a few days when they are ready to be used.

Barley is another important ingredient in beer. Barley is a cereal crop, mostly grown throughout the Northern Hemisphere. It is grown as a major cereal food and for animal feed. There are many types of barley. Each type has a different protein and enzyme content and thus produces different types of beer. High protein barley is used to produce malt beer. Both barley lines are used in English style ales. Six row barley is used mostly in lager beer. Four row barley is not suitable for use in brewing.

It takes a lot of room to produce barley and it can’t grow well indoors because it needs a lot of space. Unless you have a large field, you will not be able to grow your own barley. Picking and husking barley can be a difficult process.

While growing your own ingredients for beer can be profitable and economical, unless you have time and space you may want to leave the growing of hops or barley to others.
